The Romanov dynasty lasted roughly 300 years. It ended in 1917 with the murder of the royal family by the communists in Siberia. The ENTIRE family would be killed brutally by the communists so that the reign of the Tsar would be over.
The Romanovs were a family of intermarried royals in Europe and the Tsarina Alexandra was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Coronated in 1894, there were 5 children.

The Romanovs were not killed immediately, but held captive in a mansion called Ipatiev House. It was not lavish isolation, but a harsh one. The house became a prison. Each member would be addressed by their name and not their titles. All insignia was stripped from the Tsar's uniform. Food was rationed.
Around the house was a wall placed around the perimeter of the house blocking full view. Windows would be covered with newspaper and sealed. Any attempt to look out of the windows or signal anyone would result in being shot. Like any prisoner, they were searched and belongings were confiscated. They were only allowed to speak Russian.
The family was also psychologically tortured as any contact with people outside of the house was forbidden. Lewd images on the fence were meant to offend and humiliate the daughters. For a period the family were separated. Alexei was too ill to be housed with his family. The whole time the Romanovs were imprisoned was intended to humiliate, disrespect, and abuse them. The cruelty was also extended to their servants who were dismissed and then executed.
Around midnight, on July 17, 1918, the family were awakened and ordered to a basement room under the guise of being moved. A truck had arrived, yet the truck was to move them as corpses instead. A chair was brought in and the Tsar and Tsarina were seated. An order of execution was read and the family was executed. (Wikipedia)
Following the execution, the house was torn down and later on a church was built on the site where the Romanovs fell. (Wikipedia)
The church in the foreground had a machine gun pointed at the Tsar's bedroom. The church on the left was where Ipatev House stood.

It was hoped that there were survivors of the execution. There was a person named Anna Anderson who claimed to be Grand Duchess Anasthasia. Genetically, Anna was not a Romanov, but an impostor. There were thoughts that perhaps if there were a survivor of the Romanov family that escaped murder, the announcing your presence would make you a target for death from Soviet agents.
When the remains were discovered in 1991, All of the family except for Anasthasia and Alexei were found. Nearby, another grave was found containing burned remains. These remains were tested and confirmed to be Alexei and a sister. It is highly probable that the remains were of Anasthasia.
