Welcome to my website. I am a full professor at The Ohio State University’s John Glenn College of Public Affairs, where I hold the Ambassador Milton & Roslyn Wolf Chair.
With my students and collaborators, I am currently pursuing three interrelated lines of research. The first examines how leadership practices and workplace conditions in public organizations shape the motivation, performance, and well-being of frontline workers—particularly those in law enforcement. The second, a longstanding area of focus, investigates how social identity and relational dynamics influence the experiences and career outcomes of women and minorities in government organizations. The third, more recent line of work, explores the sources and patterns of racial and ethnic disparities in policing outcomes and using evidence-based reforms to reduce such disparities.
My work draws heavily on theories and research in organizational behavior, sociology of work, and social psychology. I have published in leading academic journals in public affairs such as the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, British Journal of Criminology, Policing & Society, and the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, as well as in management journals including the Journal of Business Ethics.
I currently serve as a co-editor of the International Public Management Journal and sit on the editorial boards of the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory and Public Management Review. I previously chaired the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management (2019–2020) and served as Communications Secretary for the International Research Society for Public Management (2014–2020).
I grew up in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and later moved to the United States for higher education. My undergraduate (CSUN) and master’s degrees (LSE) are in Information Systems Management, and I earned my Ph.D. with a concentration in organizational behavior and theory from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs at the State University of New York at Albany.
At Ohio State, I am affiliated with the Criminal Justice Research Center and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Beyond OSU, I am affiliated with Michigan State University’s Police Staffing Research Observatory and the Local Government Workplace Research Initiative at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 2021 to 2023, I was a Visiting Professor at Aarhus University’s School of Business.
