Chess Clock Etiquette
Familiarise yourself with the setting and operation of the club's chess clocks. (See Below)
Turn off any sound functions if it's a digital clock.
Traditionally the clock should be placed to the right side of the player with the White pieces. However, as compensation for moving second, Black has the right to choose whether it goes on the left or right. Better is to come to an amiable mutual agreement.
Shake hands with your opponent before you start to play and wish them well. (Maybe offer to buy them a drink, especially if it's a member of Warley Quinborne first team).
Also make sure you know what the time limit is!
Black begins the game by starting the opponent's clock.
Always remember to press your clock after you have moved. (It is courteous to remind your opponent if they forget!).
You must press the clock with the same hand with which you have moved the piece. (especially if playing against Rugeley).
Do not use a chess piece to operate the clock. It is against the rules to keep a finger on the button or to hover over it.
Don't forget to check whether your opponent has lost on time. It is the responsibility of the players to point out that his/her opponent has lost on time.
If you notice that you have lost on time before your opponent does then be honest and admit it.
Spectators are welcome to observe games in progress but they are not permitted to distract the players or influence the games in any way (i.e., by talking, reacting to moves, reminding players to hit the clock, pointing out that a player has run out of time, etc).
Make sure digital clocks are switched off when not in use to avoid draining the batteries.

All moves in 90 minutes.
If the home club have insufficient digital clocks they should inform the visiting side so they have the option bringing digital clocks if their players want to use them.
Cannock District Chess league - Rules
{4.} Time control: All moves to be made in 80 minutes (It has been agreed that Division 4 teams will play all moves in 60 minutes due to the higher number of school age players).

Setting the Digital Chess Clock - 'English Chess Company'
Flick the switch underneath to turn the clock on.
Left display shows the last program number that was used.
Right display shows initially the base time and then may flash to increment or delay periods and further timing periods depending on the program number.
If the program number and time period is the one you want then press the centre button and you are ready to go.
1.) To set a 60 min base time (quickplay - no increment) use the outer ➕ or ➖ buttons to go to program 14 then press the centre button and you are ready to go.
2.) To set a 90 min base time (quickplay - no increment) use the outer ➕ or ➖ buttons to go to program 15 then press the centre button and you are ready to go.
3.) To set an 80 min base time with a 10 second increment for each move - well there isn't a program number with these features we can use.
However we can change one of the existing programs which will then be automatically stored as a user program with the number 99.
{ If you mess up switch off and start over or give it to one of the youngsters to sort out. }
Use the ➕ or ➖ buttons to go to program 11. { As suggested by Steve Whatmore }
Press the centre button to select the program { both displays show 0:20 10 }.
Press and hold the centre button for three seconds until the left most digit starts flashing { both displays show 0:20 00 }.
Change the flashing digit to a 1 by pressing the ➕ button and press the centre button to store it. The next digit will start flashing.
As each digit starts flashing press the centre button to store it (we don't have to change any of them now). So that's 13 more presses as you cycle through.
{ Both displays now show 1:20 10 } The next press starts the clock.
If you switch off and on again program 99 will appear, retaining your new settings.
{ The 10 second increment is based on a game of sixty moves - this amounts to 60 x 10 = 600 seconds = 10 minutes which added to the 80 minute base time = 90 minutes. }
4.) To set an 80 min base time (quickplay - no increment) - again there isn't an available program number.
So, as suggested by Steve, select program 14. { both displays show 1:00 00 }
Press and hold the centre button for 3 seconds until the left most digit starts flashing.
Press the centre button to store 1 hour.
Second digit starts flashing - use the ➕ button to change this digit to 2.
Press the centre button to store and keep pressing the center button until the clock is set. { Both displays should show 1:20 00 }
You are now ready to play.
5.) FIDE Blitz, each player has 3 minutes plus 2 additional seconds per move, starting from move 1 - Use program 8.
{ "I play way too much blitz chess. It rots the brain just as surely as alcohol." — Nigel Short }
6.) FIDE Rapid, each player has 15 minutes plus 10 seconds additional time per move starting from move 1 - Use program 10.
7.) Club Rapid, each player has 1o minutes plus 3 seconds additional time per move starting from move 1 - Hint, change program 9.
Setting the PS-1688 Chess Clock
Setting this digital clock is very similar to the one above - probably easier.
Flick the switch underneath to turn the clock on.
Middle section of the screen starts flashing with the previously used program number (there are 42 separate programs).
If the program number and time period is the one you want then press the centre button and you are ready to go.
If you want to change the setting press the ➕ or ➖ rocker-button until the program number you want is displayed then press the centre button

are ready to go.
2.) To set a 90 min base time (quickplay - no increment) use the outer ➕ or ➖ buttons to go to program 05 then press the centre button and you
are ready to go.
3.) To set an 80 min base time with a 10 sec increment for each move - well there isn't a program number with these features we can use.
So - go to program 11 - (displays 0:20:10) - select it by pressing the centre button - now LONG PRESS on the right hand button (3 sec.). The left
most digit starts flashing - use the ➕ button to increment digit to a 1 (displays 1:20:10) - now using the right hand button just click through all the
digits on the screen (about 14 clicks) - program is now stored as F11 and you are ready to go.
4.) Blitz - 3min + 2s/move - Program 07
5.) Rapid - 5min + 3s/move - Program 08
