1983

Introduction

In 1983, I continued to experiment with the templates I was using and was keen to find a way to accurately record passes and continuity play. I continued with my record of kicking by shirt number and lineout throws.

This was the year that I started to measure ball in play with precision within the constraints present by live broadcasts.

I have records of three games played in 1983. England were involved in all three games.

Ball in play percentages for these games were:

• Wales v England 34% (33.66) (A drawn game 13v13) Referee: John West (Ireland)
• England v Scotland 32% (31.88)(Scotland won 22v12) Referee: T F Doocey (New Zealand)
• England v New Zealand 33% (32.97)(England won 15v9) Referee: Alan Hosie (Scotland)

I started to add basic weather notes to my notation.

• Wales v England: heavy pitch, raining at the start of the game.
• England v Scotland: sunny, dry day, breeze.
• England v New Zealand: cold day, dry, no wind.
