As a member of the Wild Wanderers Second Grade team, over the course of two terms we worked in partnership with three Lane County elementary schools to teach a diverse range of second graders about biodiversity in the Douglas fir forest. We worked together to facilitate a variety of three classroom lessons and one field trip to each of these schools. We focused on focal species in our lessons that included the Douglas-fir, Stellar's Jay, Pacific Wren, and Oregon Grape. Our hands-on field trip at Mt.Pisgah Arboretum provided students with an opportunity to practice their observational skills, gain empathy for the natural world, and foster a deep sense of curiosity for the world around them.
