The Department is reported to have started in the year 1961 offering initially Certificate Course (First Year) in French and German, added by the Diploma Course (Second Year) – Russian Language Courses got introduced later with its Certificate and Diploma Courses. The Post-Diploma Course in German was incepted in 1986 and the same in French came into being in 1987. German was introduced as one of the optional subjects at the Three Years B.A. Degree Pass Course for the students of the Maharani College; however for the want of teaching hands, this facility had to be withdrawn from 2009 onward. Russian Language Courses got terminated roughly around 2001-2002 after the retirement of Dr. G N Prasad, Assoc. Prof. in Russian (the only faculty for Russian). From 2004-2005 Certificate Course in Spanish got incepted, when a MoU between the Spanish Govt. and the University of Rajasthan was signed in February 2004, with Diploma and Post-Diploma introduced in the consecutive years to come. French got introduced from 2004 onwards as one of the optional subjects at the Three Years B.A. Degree Pass Course for the students of the Rajasthan and Maharani Colleges. First time Master’s programme in French was introduced at the same time; though the same could not be started for German. A course in SFS mode on European Studies got incepted under the academic control of the Director in 2006; though it could not long live. Four Guest Lectures on French Literature, Teaching Methodology by Prof. Kiran Choudhary and Prof. S. Soba of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi were organized on 26th and 27 October, 2015 consecutively in the Department for the students of M.A. programme in French An International-One-Day-Seminar on German Language, Literature and Culture was organized under the auspices of the University Department of Philosophy on 1 March 2014 by the German Section of the Department in collaboration with the IndoGerman-Society, Jaipur. Prof. Dr. Manfred Osten, former Gen. Secretary of the Humboldt Foundation, Germany, delivered the inaugural lecture. Prof. Wynfrid Kriegleder, Prof. Franz Patocka, Prof. Wolfgang Mueller Funk, Prof. Andrea Seidler, all renowned Professors of German Language and Literature from the University of Vienna (Austria), graced the occasion by delivering speeches.
