In 1493, Christopher Columbus named the island Santa María de Montserrate, after the Virgin of Montserrat in the Monastery of Montserrat, on Montserrat mountain, near Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain.[11] "Montserrat" means "serrated mountain" in Catalan.

Most of the beaches are of the black sand variety, but Rendezvous Bay with its yellowish-brown colored sand can be reached by a trail over a bluff or by hiring a boat.
Lime Kiln Bay is a prime snorkeling location, and there’s also good diving with a vast variety marine life. An expanding network of hiking trails accesses rainforests, old sugar and banana plantations and offers views of our spectacular coastline. Local forest rangers and private tour guides help visitors track the threatened Montserrat oriole, the national bird, and other rare species.
The main point of interest, of course is our active volcano. Lovely views are possible from Plymouth, Jackboy Hill and Garibaldi Hill which gives two different perspectives .
