Doo Yong Lee received the B.S. degree from Department of Control and Instrumentation Engineering, Seoul National University, Korea in 1985, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA in 1987 and 1993, respectively. He was a postdoctoral Research Associate with Information Technology Services of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1993 to 1994. He joined Department of Mechanical Engineering of KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) in 1994, and is POSCO Endowed Chair Professor of KAIST. He was Director of Health Technology Infrastructure with Korea Health Industry Development Institute from 2010 to 2012, and Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, KAIST from 2017 to 2021. He was President of Institute of Control, Robotics, and Systems in 2021. He served in Korean military from 1987 to 1989. He was a visiting scholar at Osaka University, Saga University, and University of California, Irvine in 1997, 2003, and 2004 to 2005, respectively. His research interests include robotics and simulation with medical applications, especially robotic medical devices, and high-fidelity interactive medical simulation with haptic interface for training and planning purposes.
Prof. Lee received Charles M. Close Doctoral Prize from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1993; Baekahm Paper Award from Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) in 1999; Young Researcher Paper Award from Institute of Control, Robotics, and Systems (ICROS) in 2002; Franklin V. Taylor Memorial Award from Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society in 2004; Outstanding Paper Award of the 2007 International Conference on Control, Automation, and Systems (ICCAS); KSME Outstanding Service Award in 2012; Fumio Harashima Mechatronics Award from ICROS in 2015; and KSME Distinguished Leadership Award in Bioengineering in 2018. He received Korea Prime Minister’s Commendation for technical contributions to the field in 2018.
He is a member of National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and Fellow of ICROS. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, and member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME); KSME; and Korean Society of Medical and Biological Engineering (KOSOMBE). He was Vice President of KSME in 2017.
Prof. Lee served as Editor of International Journal of Control, Automation, and Systems from 2018 to 2020. He was Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B from 2001 to 2012; and Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology from 2000 to 2012. He was Organizing Chair and Program Chair of ICCAS 2014 and 2008, respectively. He serves in the technical and program committees of IEEE and IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control).
