So, if you're like me, and for some reason or another don't want to use the EQ launcher to launch old rec room builds, then you're probably going to want to be able to launch them through SteamVR itself.
This also gives more control over binding settings, allowing you to use older versions of rec room with quest controllers without having that weird offset, not having to deal with launcher updates/breaking/april fools jokes.
To start, download your preferred Rec Room build. My guide wont tell you how to do this, however you can do it by following the "manual install" or "epicquesters launcher" guides.
As well as this, you will obviously need SteamVR and steam.
It may be worthwhile to ensure that your game is set to VR or Screen.
Finally, **install SGDBoop**, we will need this to set up proper game art, you can get it Here
Now that you've installed Rec Room and Boop, it's time to add rec room as a non-steam game to steam.
To start, open steam. If your steamVR is on any beta builds or downgraded I recommend reverting back to the main build.
Go to library, and click "Add a Game" at the bottom left, then click "Add a Non-Steam Game", the pop up looks a little something like the image below
On the bottom left, there is a button that says browse. click it, then click on the top bar and type %appdata%/epicquest (or where you installed it, if you changed the install location), you will be shown the image below, navigate to the folder that is a bunch of numbers (You should only have one of these if you only have one build).
From here, double click RecRoom.exe, the prompt will close and present you with this image again, but this time "Add Selected Programs" will show as blue.
Click "Add Selected Programs", Click the settings cog, then Properties, change the name (next to logo, you can make it anything, I use Rec Room 2021) and finally "Include in VR Library" (Don't check if you play screen), it will now be visible in the VR section of your SteamVR library.
Congrats! You have Rec Room in your steam library, and you should be able to search for Rec Room in your library and find it (it's the one without the space).
After adding Rec Room to your steam library, it will show without a background, this is normal, but it's not what we want
From here, go to the Rec Room page on steamgriddb
Here you're presented with fan-made game art, and 5 tabs, it is recommended you grab a Vertical Grid, Horizontal Grid, Hero, and Logo
I like this grid, so I'll use it for demonstration.
click "Apply with BOOP (non-steam)", the button is a circle with a plus inside it. you will then be prompted with something asking you to select a non-steam game. if it doesn't automatically select RecRoom, click RecRoom. then click the "OK" button at the bottom. now your image has been applied! It should be visible in SteamVR.
Repeat this process for the Horizontal grid, Hero (AKA background), and Logo. You can also upload whatever you desire to steamgriddb, so go bananas!
You should now be able to see RecRoom in your steam library, and it should look a little like this
