Dr. Ledet joined the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2004. He also holds a joint appointment in the Rehabilitation Research and Development Service at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY.

Dr. Ledet's research focuses on translational orthopaedic biomechanics and medical device design with special emphasis on degeneration of musculoskeletal tissue, "smart" implants, and devices to improve life quality for individuals with disabilities.

He has also been a consultant to the medical devices industry, has served on multiple medical advisory boards, and has been a founding partner in three medical device companies.

Dr. Ledet teaches courses at RPI related to orthopaedic surgery, medical device design, product development, and technology transfer.

Prior to coming to RPI, Dr. Ledet served as Director of the Orthopaedic Research Program at the Albany Medical College (AMC) from 1995-2004. He has maintained his relationship with AMC and is an Adjunct Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Ledet received his BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona and his MS and Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Ledet's CV is found here.

Dr. Ledet is currently on leave of absence, serving as Vice President of Research & Development and Director of the Health Innovations Incubator at the Center for Disability Services. See www.cfdsny.org/lqsi for more information.

Current Graduate Students

Elizabeth Capogna

Liz Capogna joined the iMD Lab in 2014 as a Ph.D. student after receiving her BS in biomedical engineering from the University of Buffalo. She will graduate with her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from RPI in 2021.

“I find contributing to the development of new technologies to improve the quality of someone’s life highly rewarding and motivating. Working in the iMD lab has provided me the opportunity to conduct clinically relevant, translational research that I am passionate about. The work challenges me daily but has enabled me to further develop my engineering and research skills. I am grateful to be a part of the iMD lab and eager to see the impact it has on the treatment of orthopaedic pathologies.”

Ben Liddle

Ben Liddle joined the iMD Lab in 2017 as a Ph.D. student after receiving his BS in electrical engineering from the University of New Mexico. He will graduate with his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from RPI in 2022.

"The expansive nature of the biomedical field encourages collaboration as engineers with varied experiences and backgrounds provide unique perspectives on the challenges facing the field. Being able to instrument and gather information about the body is one such unique challenge that allows me to merge my electrical engineering background with my passion for helping others."

Rebecca Levy

Rebecca Levy joined the iMD Lab in 2018 as a Ph.D. student after receiving her BS in biomedical engineering from Tulane.

"I am excited to be a part of the iMD Lab and conduct research that directly addresses patient and doctor's needs. Learning to highlight gaps in the current knowledge and then design and develop medical devices to gain new information to address these problems has given me an even greater passion for working in the medical field!"

Evan Walrath

walrae@rpi.edu

Evan Walrath joined the iMD Lab in 2019. He graduated with his BS and MEng in Biomedical Engineering in 2020 and remains on staff at the VA as a Research Assistant.

"I joined the iMD Lab to gain a better understanding of what conducting academic research in Biomedical Engineering is like. Joining the lab has allowed me to apply the engineering knowledge I've learned in my classes while taking part in a study that is clinically relevant and very interesting to me. The iMD lab has provided me with valuable experience and introduced me to a team of great people who all work to overcome challenging engineering tasks. I am very grateful for the opportunities provided by the iMD Lab.

Emma Brown

Emma Brown joined the iMD Lab in 2018. She will graduate with her BS in Biomedical Engineering in 2021 and her MS in Mechanical Engineering in 2021.

"I joined the iMD Lab because I have a passion for helping others through advancements in Biomedical Engineering. I enjoy being part of this research lab because of how clinically relevant the projects are, and the wide range of technical skills I have acquired during my time here so far. I look forward to the application of the devices and therapies currently being researched by this lab, in hope that they can improve the lives of others."

Current Undergraduate Students

Kate Ronin

Kate Ronin joined the iMD Lab in 2020. She will be graduating with her BS and MEng in Biomedical Engineering in 2022.

"I joined the iMD Lab to be involved in exciting clinically relevant and translational research. As an aspiring Biomedical Engineer, I am driven by my passion to improve lives. I look forward to applying my engineering knowledge and gaining technical experience through working on medical devices in the lab."

Nilaan Nigam

Nilaan Nigam joined the iMD Lab in 2021. He will be graduating with his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 2022.

"I am grateful to have the opportunity to work in the iMD lab because it allows me to develop experience, connections, and skills within the medical field while continuing to study mechanical engineering as an undergrad. While I find my major of choice engaging and entertaining, I feel without an underlying driving purpose it is meaningless. The iMD lab is a perfect opportunity to practice what I enjoy while contributing to helping others. On top of that the people are great to work with too."
