Welcome!
Welcome to the Innovative Medical Devices Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Since 2004, the iMD Lab has focused on translational research, testing, design, and product development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Special emphasis has been placed on (i) degenerative pathologies of the musculoskeletal system and (ii) improving life quality for individuals with disabilities.
Degenerative Pathologies of the Musculoskeletal System
The iMD Lab has been engaged in research to better characterize the in vivo biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system. We have developed award-winning implantable wireless sensor technology to enable "smart" orthopaedic implants which uniquely allows us to measure physical parameters from within the body - data which could not be obtained any other way. From this knowledge, we continue our work developing new designs for the next generation of orthopaedic implants and new therapeutic approaches for treating symptomatic degeneration of the musculoskeletal system.
Improving Life Quality for Individuals with Disabilities
The iMD Lab has an ongoing partnership with the Center for Disability Services for developing new products and best practices to improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilities. With the increasing elderly population, there is a growing need for strategies to maintain independence and quality of life with ageing. This is a largely underserved market, yet a growing sector with many needs. We continue our work identifying the unique challenges of this population and addressing these needs with research and innovative new products.
