The Fleming clan is a lowland Scottish clan that was founded in 1296. The name Fleming derives from French, being le Fleming, which indicates that the family had originated in Flanders, a dutch-speaking region in Belgium. The origin of the Fleming clan starts during the Scottish Wars of Independence, when nine Fleming's signed the Ragman Rolls, in which they had swore fealty to Edward I of England. One of the first signatories was Sir Robert Fleming, who was the first to join Robert the Bruce after killing Comyn, and exclaiming "Let the Deed Shaw" in 1306.
In 1342, Sir Malcom Fleming would be created the Earl of Wigtown by David II of Scotland for helping him stay safe from Edward Balliol and the English.
