THE BAND THAT ALMOST BROUGHT ME BACK TO THE SCENE - The Brooklyn based Royal Playboy Cartel
Taken from a Facebook post
-
I left the scene in 1990, but around 25 years ago a band from .... BROOKLYN (that's right BROOKLYN) almost had me returning to the industry.
They were called ... ROYAL PLAYBOY CARTEL
They were based in Bensonhurst.
They were too young for the L'Amour prime, but being from the area, they heard all about the lore.
One night in a strip club in Manhattan, I told the singer and guitarist who I "used" to be and they popped. They invited me to see the band and i was blown away. they asked for advice and i gave it to them.
Then a funny thing happened in 2002 ...
They were playing a club in Manhattan and a guy approaches and says "I am producing Ozzfest in Prague, Czechia and want you on the bill"
The band thought he was FoS but gave them their demo and a month later he called them and said, "Your version of Eleanor Rigby is getting a lot of airplay on metal stations and I want to officially offer you Ozzfest" and he put them on right before the big hitters of Slayer, Tool and Ozzy.
Here is a band that couldn't get booked in CBGB and refused to P2P in "Brooklyn" but they are playing Ozzfest in front of 40-50k in Prague.
They asked me for advice for the show and if i was interested in "working with them"
It was tempting but I realized the industry has changed in 15 years and I didn't have the connections but will help as much as possible.
They discussed the possibility of having me take the trip but it made no sense budget wise.
They wound up staying and playing an arena with Robert Plant and it looked like they were on their way ...
Then they got back to Brooklyn and ZILCH
Sadly, they broke up soon after, but how many unknown bands get to play the main stage of Ozzfest?
I uploaded a b-roll video (no crowd mic, just board sound) of them doing Eleanor Rigby and adding an original Get Up
You can't hear the crowd but can see them going crazy ... THEY KILLED IT
RIP Walter (guitarist) who was one of my best friends from 1999-2021. I miss ya buddy
Give them a listen ....
