obviously its become a saying in modern parlance to NOT do it, but exactly how dangerous of a profession was it to be the royal messenger/ emissary who had to go to a foreign perhaps hostile nation, deliver potentially bad news and be totally and completely under their power.

The story goes that King John intended to travel through the neighbourhood. At that time in England, any road the king travelled on had to be made a public highway, but the people of Gotham did not want a public highway through their village. The villagers feigned imbecility when the royal messengers arrived.[1] Wherever the messengers went, they saw the rustics engaged in some absurd task.[2] Based on this report, John determined to have his hunting lodge elsewhere, and the wise men boasted, "We ween there are more fools pass through Gotham than remain in it."[3]

According to the 1874 edition of Blount's Tenures of Land, King John's messengers "found some of the inhabitants engaged in endeavouring to drown an eel in a pool of water; some were employed in dragging carts upon a large barn, to shade the wood from the sun; others were tumbling their cheeses down a hill, that they might find their way to Nottingham for sale; and some were employed in hedging in a cuckoo which had perched upon an old bush which stood where the present one now stands;[4] in short, they were all employed in some foolish way or other which convinced the king's servants that it was a village of fools, whence arose the old adage, "the wise men of Gotham" or "the fools of Gotham".[5][6]

The root metaphor of God's kingship appears to have been the most fertile of those applied to God in the Bible. Although this metaphor was commonly applied to deities in the ancient Near East, in Israel it bore unique fruits. The seriousness with which it was taken is manifested in Israel's unique conception of her relation with God as a covenant with a suzerain. Conformably, Israel viewed her title to her land as a grant from the suzerain. Her prophets were pictured as royal messengers or ambassadors. Similarly expressive of God's kingship is the Israelite concept of divine authorship of laws, a role reserved for kings elsewhere in the ancient Near East.

When seated in the gardens under the shade of the ancient trees, listening to the songs and chirpings of innumerable birds, it seemsreally incongruous that in so restful a[Pg 14] spot, where so much speaksof quiet country life, weighty legal matters are for ever beingtransacted. Could we penetrate into the secrets of many of the old, dark houses that frown around, what tales of anxiety, of suffering, what histories of the trials that blight men's lives would come tolight.

As for the starling, this clever bird knows where he is well off, he istherefore a very constant visitor. Many delicate little songsters too, who, having escaped from their cages, find that the liberty they havegained has only made them persecuted waifs and strays in the wildernessof London, seem to know, by intuition, that here they are not only insafety, but secure of a kind welcome.

Goldfinches, chaffinches, green and gray linnets, the lesser redpole, robins, willow-wren, even the song-thrush may from time to time befound here, and, perched on the lower branches of the trees, reward thekind hands that have given them food by pouring forth some of theirsweetest and most touching songs.

Standing in the old Hall, we can see, in fancy, the grand andpicturesque [Pg 48]entertainment. We can see the young and graceful, though somewhat stern-faced girl, queening it so royally amongst herenthusiastic admirers. How happy she is now in her consciousness ofyouth, and consequent beauty, in her royal dignity, a Queen at last inher glorious kingdom. Above all, especially happy in being at lengthfree, no longer in daily terror of a prison or a scaffold. No longerdreading to have to seal by her blood her resolve to keep intact herroyal position as heir to the throne, safe at last from the terror ofbeing called on to lay down her life ere she would abjure her religionfor that of her bigot sister Mary. ff782bc1db
