Roy Lichtenstein

DAY 1 - Art History

Roy Lichtenstein

Read the artist biography to the left by clicking on the link below the sheet. Then watch the video below. Once you are more familiar with the artist you will work on a couple of projects!

Finish this piece of art using the benday dots and bright colors.

Whaam! Add benday dots, lines and fill with color in the style of Lichtenstein below. Pay attention to how the elements are layered as you will be creating your own artwork in this style later on.

If you don't have a printer, you can re-create this piece of art on a separate sheet, or color digitally.

DAY 2 - Art Creation

Download this How-To Draw Comic Book Exclamation and use to create your own artwork.

Use the examples on the previous page to help you create a comic style artwork similar to Lichtenstein. Start with pencil, draw lightly and layer the elements shown. Each time you add an element on top of another erase any lines that it covers. Finally create your exclamation word on top. Overlap the letters and don’t foget the exclamation! Once you have the pencil drawing the way you like it, outline with a thick marker and fill with bright colors, lines and benday dots in the style of Lichtenstein

DAY 3 - Art Analysis

DAY 4 & 5 - Art Creation

Pop Art Project

Materials: Sharpies or other markers, or colored pencils. Your choice.

Example of Final Project Below

Pop Art from Comic Book

Find a comic strip frame that you like and re-create it on the worksheet provided or on a piece of drawing paper.

Just as Lichtenstein did, you should crop or change the comic to emphasize the meaning you are trying to convey.

You can print and color, re-draw on your own paper and color, or color digitally on an iPad or Touch Screen Chromebook. Don't forget to send in a picture of the original comic and answer the reflection question.
