GEMS uses more than three times the sensors and inputs than the earlier Hotwire system. Many are very sensitive. There is very little that can be done with a generic OBDIIreader. To manage GEMS, Landrover developed a notebook computer at the outsetwhich they referred to as TestBook. It can be connected to the main diagnosticplug. These units were sold to LR dealers for 30K originally. Landrover wasnot too keen to sell it to consumers and the vital software was largely keptbetween their dealers.

A lot of independents have the Autologic or similar "testbook" and, obviously they will normally be a lot cheaper than a main dealer. The autologic (if updated) can do anything that the testbook can do so no worries there.

I recently went to a rover garage to have a new keyfob coded but the mechanic had no luck connecting to the ECU, he tried connecting on the communication port and directly in various location of the wire loom.

I need to plot and monitor the engine parameters & real time data, just like as if it would be an OBD compliant engine , even knowing it isn't. Does anyone know what type/ brand of 'home use' interface-system works on this little car? What do you do out here -do you really contact an dealer every time you have to solve a problem -with other words, is the 'Rover special' testbook-system the only suitable out there ?
