Routes of Rhythm is an original interdisciplinary performance that journeys across the Atlantic through rhythm, movement, and storytelling. Bringing together artists from Guinea, Togo, Benin, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and the Mexican American community, the work celebrates the interconnected African, Indigenous, and Latin American artistic traditions that continue to shape contemporary cultural expression throughout the Americas.
Developed through collaborative research, creative exchange, and shared artistic practice, the performance celebrates the living dialogue between African, Indigenous, and Latin American artistic traditions. Rather than presenting traditions as historical artifacts or fixed folklore, Routes of Rhythm embraces them as dynamic artistic languages that continue to evolve across generations, communities, and borders.
At its heart, the performance asks a simple question:
Through movement, music, and oral traditions, rhythm becomes a living archive—preserving histories, expressing resilience, celebrating joy, and connecting people across continents and generations.
The performance brings together:
Live West African percussion
Traditional West African dance
Contemporary choreography
Circus arts
Storytelling
Narration
Projected visuals
Audience participation
Rather than presenting separate performances from different countries, Routes of Rhythm weaves these traditions into a single contemporary artistic experience where each chapter reveals another stage of a shared cultural journey.
The performance journeys through artistic traditions that continue to resonate throughout the Americas, including:
Brazil — Oshun, Samba, Capoeira
Colombia — Mapalé, Cumbia, Currulao, Bullerengue
Mexico — Son Jarocho (Veracruz) and Danza de los Diablos (Oaxaca)
Together, these traditions reveal how rhythm has traveled, transformed, and taken root across continents, preserving ancestral knowledge while continually evolving through local communities and contemporary artists.
More than a performance, Routes of Rhythm is an invitation to experience rhythm as a shared human language, one that carries memory, resilience, celebration, and belonging across generations and borders. Created collaboratively by artists of different ages, disciplines, and cultural backgrounds, the work celebrates the enduring creativity of communities whose artistic traditions continue to shape the cultural landscape of the Americas today.
