In this day and age it's not often we can say something is life changing, but in my case I can honestly say this cargo bike has made a massive difference. Five years ago I had to hang up my car keys (for reasons explained in the Macular Society page) and whilst I was used to cycling, the limitations of a standard 'pushang', as we call them in Guernsey, became increasingly evident. I first saw the cargo bike on display at the West Show in July 2018 and after a lot of research into this style of bike, I placed my order and took delivery in September; and I've never regretted it.
So, this will be my mode of transport for the challenge. Yes, it is electric, but it's an e-bike/peddle/peddle-assisted.., call it what you will, it's still fundamentally a push-bike, it just has a motor for assistance; it's definitely not motorised! It doesn't have a throttle or an accelerator and the motor will only work when being peddled; stop peddling and it'll cut out, and exceed 15.5 mph (UK regulations) and it'll cut out, too. So at speeds in excess of 15.5 mph I'm under my own steam and propelling a bike that weighs 60 lb (30 kg), when fully kitted. Just as a point of comparison, the minimum weight of bikes used on the Tour de France is 14.99 lb (6.8 kg)! As well as fitting this challenge in around my day job, I daresay I'll have some chores to do, such as the school run, weekly shop etc., but with a carrying capacity of 440 lb (200 kg,), including the rider, this work-horse will hopefully cope!
The motor will help to flatten the hills and give assistance when battling into a headwind, but trying to complete an average of 81.6 miles per day is still a bit of a challenge don't you think?
