Liverpool city centre offers a wide range of dining options, all within walking distance from the Department and the workshop venues. For a relaxed lunch or dinner, Bold Street is a popular destination known for its independent eateries and vibrant atmosphere. Recommended spots include Rudy’s Pizza Napoletana, a local favourite for wood-fired pizzas, Bundobust, which serves innovative Indian street food in a laid-back setting, and The Italian Club, a family-run restaurant offering authentic Italian cuisine in a cosy setting. Just around the corner, Church Street, Lord Street and Castle Street also offer a variety of restaurants and cafés, from casual chains to local bistros. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a more substantial meal, the area has something to suit all tastes.
Lunch will be provided at the workshop on both days.
Following the end of the workshop at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, we will set off on a walking tour through Liverpool’s vibrant and historic city centre. We will depart from the Department of Mathematical Sciences and make our way downhill to our first stop: the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. This striking modernist structure is one of the most distinctive religious buildings in the UK and a symbol of the city’s architectural diversity.
From there, we will continue on to the Anglican Cathedral, the largest cathedral in the United Kingdom and the fifth largest in Europe. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, it is renowned for its soaring Gothic arches, grand organ, and panoramic views from the tower.
Leaving the cathedral behind, we will head to Chinatown, home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe. At its centre stands the beautifully ornate Chinese Arch, the tallest of its kind outside China and a gift from Liverpool’s twin city, Shanghai.
Our route then takes us to the Bombed-Out Church (St. Luke’s), a powerful memorial to the Liverpool Blitz, preserved as a roofless shell and now used as a venue for cultural events and public art.
We will then stroll down Bold Street, one of Liverpool’s liveliest streets, full of independent cafés, shops, and restaurants. At the bottom of the street, we will make a brief stop near the Bluecoat to see the much-loved Paddington Bear statue.
From there, we will enter Liverpool ONE, the city’s main open-air shopping and leisure complex. We will head to the waterfront and docks then walk down to the Royal Albert Dock, a site that blends maritime history with museums, galleries, and restaurants set around the historic basin.
Our walk continues to the nearby Royal Liver Building, one of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks. Topped by the famous Liver Birds, one facing the sea, the other watching over the city, it forms part of the city’s famous “Three Graces”.
Just a few steps away is the Beatles Statue, a popular photo stop commemorating the city's most legendary musical export. From there, we’ll walk to Mathew Street, home to the world-famous Cavern Club, where The Beatles played nearly 300 times at the start of their career.
Finally, we will head up toward the cultural heart of the city and finish the tour at St. George’s Hall, a grand neoclassical building facing Lime Street Station. The surrounding area is also home to the World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery, rounding off the walk in one of Liverpool’s most architecturally impressive quarters.
