by Rosie Holt
My name is Rosie Holt, and I was born in July 1985 in Somerset, England. I am a British actress, comedian, and satirist, though I never quite imagined that pretending to be a Conservative MP on the internet would become my claim to fame. Sometimes life takes the most unexpected turns – and mine certainly has.
I grew up in Somerset, in the beautiful English countryside. As a Somerset-born comedian, I'm confident with West Country accents, which has served me well in my career as a hugely versatile comedy actor.
My childhood in Somerset was relatively quiet compared to the viral internet fame that would later find me. I always had an interest in performance and comedy, but I never imagined that a global pandemic would be the catalyst for my breakthrough.
Before the internet knew me as "MP Rosie Holt," I was working as an actor and writer. My early work included projects like "Mina Murray's Journal" (2016) and "Sink" (2018).
In the world of stand-up comedy, I was building a solid foundation. I was a finalist at the Amused Moose New Comic, Leicester Square New Comedian & Bath New Act awards. These experiences taught me the fundamentals of comedy timing and character work that would prove invaluable when I started creating content online.
I also appeared on television shows like The Russell Howard Hour and The News Quiz on Radio 4, gaining experience in satirical comedy and political humor.
Everything changed in 2020, when I became one of a number of comedians who found success on the internet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like everyone else, I was stuck at home during lockdown, but instead of just binge-watching Netflix, I started creating content.
I began my satirical videos, "Woman Who...," released on my Twitter feed, during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. What started as a creative outlet during a frustrating time quickly became something much bigger.
The Guardian newspaper noted my "strong line in parodies of the [type of] political speech that veers into drivel" – which was exactly what I was going for. I wanted to capture the absurdity of political discourse, especially the kind that sounds important but says absolutely nothing.
My breakthrough character is MP Rosie Holt, a fictional Conservative politician who became a viral sensation. I pretend to be a Tory MP in videos that perfectly capture the tone-deaf, out-of-touch nature of political spin.
The character became a viral sensation during lockdown, and people began taking the videos seriously. I'm frequently mistaken for a real Tory MP on Twitter, which is both hilarious and slightly concerning about the state of actual political discourse.
My satirical videos have achieved more than 9 million views, with over 6.5 million views of me playing an MP skewering the political landscape. The success was immediate and overwhelming – suddenly everyone was sharing my videos and debating whether I was real or not.
As I've often said, my character is no more unbelievable than actual Conservative politicians like Michael Fabricant – "He does look like someone someone came up with in a very bad improv," I once joked.
The success of my political satire hasn't gone unnoticed in the comedy world. I'm a winner of the Chortle Social Media Award 2022 and a nominee of the BPG Emerging Creators Award 2022 and Funny Women Content Creator Award 2022.
These awards recognize not just the viral success of my content, but the craft and skill involved in creating effective satirical comedy. It's one thing to go viral – it's another to be recognized by your peers in the comedy industry.
Taking my internet success to the stage has been an exciting challenge. My live show offers a funny, satirical look at politics where I bring the MP Rosie Holt character to life in person.
When audiences come to see my show, they can expect a good time. It's surreal performing live as a character that people know from their phone screens – there's something magical about bringing internet comedy into a real-world setting.
I've performed at venues across the UK, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where I discussed mocking Tory MPs, whether it's harder to satirise Labour, and my love of Edinburgh.
Beyond my viral videos and live performances, I'm also the host of the ARIA nominated satirical podcast, Noncensored. The podcast allows me to dive deeper into political satire and commentary, exploring topics that might be too complex for a two-minute Twitter video.
Having a podcast gives me the freedom to have longer conversations about politics, comedy, and the intersection between them. It's a different medium that requires different skills, but it's allowed me to expand beyond just the character work.
My work as a hugely versatile comedy actor with a clear, intelligent delivery has opened doors beyond social media. I work with agencies like Sue Terry Voices, expanding my range into voice acting and other performance opportunities.
I'm also set to appear in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025), showing that my internet fame has translated into more traditional acting opportunities.
I'm a member of The Comedy Store Players, one of London's most prestigious improvisation groups. This work keeps me sharp and grounded in live performance, balancing my digital success with traditional comedy skills.
Working with The Comedy Store Players reminds me that comedy is fundamentally about connecting with a live audience – something that's easy to forget when you're creating content for screens.
As of 2024, I'm in a relationship with fellow comedian Stewart Lee, which has been a wonderful development in my personal life. Dating another comedian means having someone who truly understands the unique pressures and rewards of this career.
Looking back on my journey from Somerset actress to viral satirist, it's been quite a ride. Comedy has helped Britons through the last five years of the Tories, and I'm proud to have played a small part in that.
My character went viral during Covid-19 with my alter ego, a desperate and loyal Conservative politician, but what started as lockdown entertainment became a way for people to process the absurdity of political life.
The fact that people regularly mistake my satirical character for a real MP says something profound about the state of political discourse. When satire becomes indistinguishable from reality, we're living in interesting times indeed.
My website tagline says it all: "I'm just a girl, standing in front of the internet, asking it to love her" – and somehow, it worked. From my base in Somerset to stages across the UK and screens around the world, it's been an incredible journey.
I continue to create content that holds up a mirror to political absurdity, whether through live shows, podcasts, or those viral Twitter videos that started it all. The political landscape keeps providing material, and I'll keep turning it into comedy.
As long as politicians keep saying ridiculous things with straight faces, there'll be a place for MP Rosie Holt to say them back with just enough sincerity to make people wonder if she's real. And maybe that's exactly what political satire should do – make us question what's real and what's performance in our public discourse.
