Hangal is the taluk headquarters in the district of Haveri in North Karnataka. The district came into being in 2001 carved out of Gulbarga District. The majority population of Hangal comprises scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Most of them are labourers employed by the landlords of the Lingayat community, the prominent community in greater regions of North Karnataka. Since farming is seasonal, migration to other parts of the State in search of livelihood is a common feature of these poor sections of society.
There are quite a number of schools in Hangal but the dropout rate is quite high the cause being migration and poverty. Roshni Social Action Centre started in Hangal by the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters brought a ray of hope to the people of Hangal. Having seen or heard that convents are always associated with schools they insisted that the Sisters start an English medium school in Hangal as there was none in the vicinity. Their request was positively responded to by Sr Grace Alvares, the then Superior and directress of Roshni Centre. She made known this request to Rev. Sr Doreen D’Souza, the Provincial Superior who gave the green signal as schools are the best channels to empower the vulnerable, the marginalized and especially the girl child.
Three acres of land were bought just one kilometre away from Roshni Social Action Centre. Pre –primary classes and class 1 (lower primary school) were started in 2003. As the construction of the school building was in progress classes were temporarily housed in Roshni Social Action Centre with 82 students and Sr Gabriel Rodrigues as headmistress. When the building was ready the School was shifted to the present building.
As finance was a drawback the school building was constructed stage by stage. It took nearly five years to complete the structure. In 2008 during the time of Rev. Sr Susheela Sequeira, the Provincial Superior of Mangalore, the school building was completed with all the requirements of a good school.
Permission was sought to start a higher primary school in 2007-08 and a high school in 2010-11. It was Sr Apoline Pais who worked hard to obtain this permission as knocking at the doors of the Government offices is the last task one would like to opt for. In the year 2013 when the first batch of students passed out of the School with 100% results, a record in the history of Hangal, it was a matter to celebrate not only for the School staff and students but the whole of Hangal town as Roshni proved its mettle by being the best school in terms of education of quality. The first batch was 39 in number. At present the School strength is 754.
Roshni School always recognizes the hard work put in by the Sisters and the staff together with the generosity of the Congregation and local people. This institution has made tremendous progress within the span of 10 years. This was possible because of the dedicated, enthusiastic, hardworking headmistresses and their collaborators. Sr Gabriel Rodrigues was the headmistress for two years, Sr Apoline Pais the second headmistress who worked hard for the permission and recognition of Roshni Hr Pry and High School. They took personal interest in the performance of the students and did their best for a holistic education.
When Sr Apoline Pais was transferred in 2009 the lot fell on Sr Linet D’ Souza who strives with the help of the staff and the collaboration of the Parent-Teachers’ Association towards quality education of every child. Abacus, Computer education, Smart Class and a good library are introduced to suit the present challenging world. As the demand for admission is on the increase there is a need to have additional divisions, and to extend the building. It is also necessary to train more Sisters to continue this apostolate with greater commitment and make sure the School makes a difference to the general public of Hangal.
