Rooster Raga is the story of a rooster. An adorable one. With a cute name as well 'Ruru.' One who doesn't sing the usual rooster call of 'Kukaroo Kuroo'. But loves to sing otherwise.

Written by Natasha Sharma and brilliantly illustrated by Priya Kuriyan, the book is a fun read. While Tulika books recommend the age as 3+, honestly I feel even 2+ kids will enjoy the book if it's read out loud. I would strongly recommend the book for playgroup/ nursery schools as a read-aloud book.

The story is about Ruru, a rooster, who can't sing the usual Rooster call, but can sing so many other tunes. However, on the day before Rooster Day, he gets worried, because he has to sing the rooster call. So he goes to take help from all his friends around. He goes to the cow, donkey, cat, piglets, duck, and goat to learn how to get the call right. But does he get it at all? And what happens on the Rooster day? That's what the book is all about.

Do roosters sing ragas? This one does, but like all true artistes gets to it after a lot of struggle! Every time he opens his mouth he sings a new tune but not the kukaroo-kuroo of the other roosters. His friends skip and stretch, stamp and roll and try to teach him. Try as he might our rooster kuka-moooooos, kuka-heeen haaans, kuka-miaooows but can't kukaroo-kuroo. This cheery, foot-tapping story invites big and little readers to move and sing, clap and tap along with Priya Kuriyan's expressive characters.

A visual treat with its brilliant colours, great layout and minimal text! On the surface, the story is bright, effervescent and fun, but deep down it conveys an all-important message to children - It is alright to be different. Shamim Padamsee, Young India Books

Rooster Ruru has a dilemma. Whenever he sings, instead of the traditional rooster song , Kukaroo Kuroo, what emerges from his throat is a wide range of sounds, anything and everything but what he was supposed to say.

On the surface, the story is bright, effervescent and fun, but deep down it conveys an all-important message to children - It is alright to be different. Everyone has his or her own special talent and own special challenges. It is neccessary to understand and appreciate them and ford our own individual paths with confidence.

It differs for every book. For the History Mystery series, once my research is done, I usually have an outline or broad plot direction. A story I am currently working on has characters, a setting and I have the theme I want to write to. I had an outline in mind but the different elements of the plot are developing as I write it. Whichever way I write, I like to keep the possibility of taking it in a different direction if I feel like.

Now I do not know whether it was that they had eaten till they were too fat, or whether they had become proud, but they would not go home on foot. The rooster had to build a little carriage of nutshells.

The duck ran with open beak at the rooster. But the rooster responded in time and boldly attacked the duck. He succeeded in wounding her so with his spurs that she begged for mercy and willingly let herself be harnessed to the carriage as a punishment.

After understanding her style of illustration and story, the children were finally ready to meet Priya Kuriyan. As much as children were excited to meet her, we sensed a similar excitement in Priya Kuriyan. She was welcoming, kind and very generous with the children. Priya spoke about her journey with illustrating, she shared her favourite stories and then shared some of the processes she uses when developing a character.

Comic/graphic stories have the elements of a story, and through this format, children can learn the different story elements of a protagonist, antagonist, settings, and plot. Children who read are confident learners. They learn language, vocabulary and the syntax of the language without much effort. Reading with meaning and developing comprehension skills are important. Comprehension skill does not only mean only to understand the story and know what happened in the end. It involves different aspects of thinking.

India has some great outstanding awards like the Jnanpith Award, Sahitya Akademi Awards with different categories and Hindu Literary Awards. Each of these national awards acknowledges works of authors, illustrators, and publishers whose passion lies in bringing out the best literature for readers. Indian culture has a plethora of folklore, fables, and mythology. It is only recently in the last decade; private organizations have established literary awards to inspire, acknowledge, appreciate different genres as well as give voice to authors with new ideas. Many awards like the Jarul Book Award, Crossword Award, Big Little Book Award, and the Hindu Young Book Awards are among the few that acknowledge creative thinking and celebrate Indian Literature. Thanks to publishers like Karadi Tales, Tulika, Fingerprint, Katha, Little Latitude and others. Times of India covered this story and helped support Jarul Award.

In the dim and distant past, some of my ancestors came to these islands as Viking invaders (I know this from a genetic quirk that affects the tendons in my hands). My surname Mead probably derives from the pre-7th century native word moed meaning meadow. There is no obvious trace of either Celtic or Norman hereditary in my family history. It seems pretty certain that I came out of that Anglo-Saxon-Norse melting pot that we now call the English and I have to admit that I am sorely out of touch with my own oral tradition.

That was the best I could come up with in two minutes but having spent a decade as both a storytelling performer and as a consultant working with story and narrative in all sorts of organisations, I really should have remembered that the best answer would have been a story. 2351a5e196
