About 20 years ago, there lived a boy by the name of Jasper. He was eleven years old and he was full of fun and adventure. He was neat and clean but not very smart.
One morning, as usual, he got up and went into the bathroom to brush his teeth.
But when he looked in the bathroom mirror, he saw that his face was the horrible face of an ugly monster. Jasper screamed. He screamed so loud that it woke up his older sister, Penelope.
Penelope, who was four years older than Jasper, didn't get excited easily, but when she came down stairs and took one look at Jasper's face, it took her breath away.
About this time Bernie, Jasper's brother, entered the room to see what was going on. He took one look at Jasper and started to laugh.
Penelope got angry and said, "What are you laughing about?"
Bernie said, "Little sister, don't you see what's going on? There's nothing wrong with Jasper. He went out trick-or-treating last night and when he got back he was so tired that he forgot to take off his mask."
Realizing that was probably true, Penny, as her brothers called her, started to laugh too.
But Jasper didn't join in on the laughter. True, he was happy that his face hadn't changed into that of an ugly monster, but he was very upset by the fact he couldn't take the mask off. When he was trick-or-treating, the mask kept falling off so he put SuperGlue on his face to keep it on. Even though Jasper was really good about brushing his teeth, some times he made bad decisions. He wasn't as bright as his teeth.
Penelope didn't know what to do but she wanted to do something. She decided to try to cheer him up by changing the subject. She said, "Hey Jasper, do you think it will snow again on Christmas this year? If it does, I'll help you build a snowman in the backyard." Jasper didn't say a word. His monster expression stayed the same.
Penny was hoping that mentioning Christmas would make Jasper smile, and maybe it did, but she had no way of knowing.
The next day, luckily, the mask came off all by itself. And nobody knows why.
