Each child has been given 5 reading books to take home. I would suggest you follow the normal school routine where they read you the book first on Monday and on Tuesday they can reread the same book. This helps them to build fluency and confidence. Repeat with a new book on Wednesday and Thursday. Don't forget to fill out their yellow reading log that lives in their book bag and keep a running total along the side. There are great instructions in there if you have not had a chance to have a look. If they reach a milestone (25, 50, 75 etc books read) get them to place a sticker on the certificate page and fill it in for them.
Some things you can do before they read the story is to:
Get your child to predict what they think the story is about
Have a look at the pictures and see if they there is something they can relate to
Some things you can do as they read the story is to:
Ask them to tell you what is happening in the story
Ask why they think something is happening
Ask them what they would do if that was them in the story
Some things you can do after they have read the story is to:
Ask them some simple recall questions about the story eg: Who were the characters? What did they do? What happened when?
Ask them some questions about why they think a particular event happened in the story
Get them to retell the story to you in as much detail as they can. See if they can do this without the pictures to support but if they need support then get them to use the book.
This is a free app that you can download from the app store on your smart phone or tablet or you can log into online on the Epic website (click to follow the link).
When you open the page or the app, you do NOT need to create and account. Just click on 'Log In' then 'Students and Educators'.
From there you just need to enter the class code which is hbi2720 and then click on your child's name. The children are familiar with using epic, but please make sure they are logging in as themselves.
The levels are not indicative of their reading ability, they are based on the number of stories they have read.
Selecting 'Read to me' will have the device they are using read the story out loud to them. There are lots of fun things on there to use so have an explore with them.

This is a free app that you can download from the app store on your smart phone or tablet. It has a focus on High Frequency Words. The children start at the beginning and as they progress, they collect puzzle pieces and earn points to move them to the next level.
There is also a similar site called Reading Eggs, created by the same company and it has a wider variety of content on there. There are good reviews about it online however it is a paid app.
