AP Course Description:
A detailed syllabus can be found on Canvas for AP 2D Art & Design and AP Drawing Portfolio.
AP art courses require students to complete and submit a portfolio of work for college credit. This is our version of an AP exam. The art submitted must be college level and tutorial sessions will be made available to help with that expectation. A $20.00 registration fee will have to be paid during the registration period in October. This fee is discounted from a higher one but requires students to attend tutorials. Further information and details will be made available later this fall. Once committed, the student must finish the majority of the work by March of that school year. April will be used to finalize and curate the work for the online submission in the first week of May. Students failing to complete and submit their work will have to pay the remainder of the discounted fee before the end of the school year.
This is a self paced course and requires the maturity level to fulfill a commitment. Students will be dropped from this class if they begin to fall behind. We require a minimum of five completed works with process photos and or written documentation for each. This documentation is proof of planning and preliminary work that the College Board requires and is an integral part of the online portfolio. There will be some writing exercises throughout the year in preparation for the Written Evidence section of the portfolio and the labeling information required for all of the work, however, most of the time spent in this class will be dedicated to creating art. Everything will be covered in greater detail during the class period.
Materials needed for this course:
We will provide materials and supplies to an extent, but students are encouraged to experiment in this class and that might require specialty materials that we may not have available. In this case the responsibility will fall on the student. The more experimental and unique the art, then the better chances of earning a higher score.
Pre-AP Visual Arts Course Description and Materials:
This course will be taught using a combination the syllabi for AP 2D Design and AP Drawing Portfolio. Canvas will have a detailed version of this. These students will experience a sampling of the work done for each of those portfolios.
Art 2 Photography Course Description:
There is a detailed syllabus for this course on Canvas. During the fall semester black and white photography will be the main goal. Students will learn how to use an analog 35mm film camera. They will learn to develop film and print their own pictures using chemicals in darkrooms. They will work in groups while completing a series of assignments throughout the year. In the spring semester students will switch from black and white analog photography to color photography with digital cameras. In class, Adobe Photoshop will be used to edit and prepare their work for submission.
