The National School on Algebra

The National School on Algebra has a long tradition in Romania. The first five schools were organized by Al. I Cuza University of Iaşi in the period 1985-1989. The organization of schools was resumed after a 9-year break in 1998. Since then, the schools were organized every year until 2019. In the period 2020-2022, it was another break due to the pandemic situation. The web page of the previous schools is available here

Commutative algebra has become an active area of research in the last decades. It has strong connections with algebraic geometry and combinatorics. Gröbner basis theory  initiated by Buchberger in the 1960s has become an important tool to experiment and generate complex examples and conjectures  that were not accessible before the computer era.

Over time, the National School of Algebra has followed the new trends in commutative algebra and related fields. Regularly, the school consists of a series of mini-courses led by invited scholars. The courses  focus on fundamental topics in commutative algebra that are not covered in the standard courses. Very often, the lectures are accompanied by problem sessions  focused on research.

The school had a major contribution in attracting Romanian students to algebra research and led to long-term scientific collaborations between Romanian and foreign researchers in the field.
