New teachers often feel overwhelmed when they start managing a classroom. The difference between what they hoped for and what happens can be tough. If they don't get enough help, this can lead to problems like burnout or even quitting teaching.
I realized this after talking to new teachers and thinking about my first year of teaching. It was clear that something like a practical guide could help new teachers manage behavior in the classroom.
So, I decided to make an online e-learning tool with real-life situations. These situations are things new teachers often deal with, and they make teachers think hard about how to handle them.
This idea matches what schools already do. They use online training for new teachers. My idea fits right into that, making it easy and affordable for all new teachers to get the most out of this helpful training program.
I made this online learning class by using what I know and talking to experts in education. I used a mix of planning, learning through situations, and tools like Articulate Storyline 360, Canva Pro, and Microsoft Powerpoint to make this online learning experience.
After talking with other teachers, it was clear that this training was really needed. Using my own experience, talking to experts, and looking at the best ways to do things, I figured out the most important things that teachers need to do to manage behavior in the classroom. I put all this info together in a plan, and then I worked with the experts to pick the top three things we should really concentrate on.
Using the plan I made for what actions to take, I created a written plan for the project. I talked with experts on the subject to shape this plan and make it feel real. The idea for this particular plan had to be something people could understand and believe in. The simulation puts the person in the shoes of a new teacher who has to deal with different behavior problems throughout one day.
The written plan explains the whole situation with a bunch of questions and gives choices to pick from. It has things like text to read, what characters say, and what happens because of the choices. If the learner has a hard time, they can get help from a character named Zara before making a choice. The plan shows both good and bad results to help the learner see why their choices matter and to guide them to the right choice.
Before making a picture story and an initial model, I worked on the way the slides look in Canva Pro and Microsoft Powerpoint. I began with basic sketches and finished with the last versions. This let me try out different art styles, color combinations, and arrangements and get the okay for any modifications before I started working on it in Storyline. I liked using Canva Pro because it was really great for creating visuals and making small changes easily. This made my creative work smoother and let me come up with lots of versions fast until I got to the end project.
After I finished making visual mockups of how things would look and got feedback from the experts , I made a detailed plan for how everything would work. This plan had not only the pictures of the slides, but also the instructions for what should happen when the user clicks or does something, and other technical notes to make the story run.
After that, I started making an interactive sample using Articulate Storyline 360. This sample only had the first two questions, (which included the assist feature), using the templates I made in Microsoft PowerPoint. I added a lot of things like different looks for objects, triggers, and different layers to show more info. The main thing I needed to know was if the way it looked and worked was acceptable. I used Review 360 to get feedback from the experts and then I made changes based on that feedback. I fixed things like spacing, how words were written, and button aesthetics. After doing this many times and checking for any mistakes, I added the last question and the final reflection.
After finishing this project, I shared it with the SMES and they gave me positive feedback. They liked how the content was relatable, the visuals were nice, and it was easy to use.
I also wanted to test it on users/learners who aren't connected to education to get more feedback on usability and content. They really liked the interactivity. They felt like they could learn strategies from it that would help them in similar situations, especially because of the real-life "consequences" shown when they made the wrong choice. This tells me that using scenarios for eLearning was a good idea.
While working on this, I got to explore some amazing tools like Canva Pro, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Articulate Storyline. I learned a lot about things like triggers, states, variables, and layers in Storyline, which will help me work faster and become even more creative on future projects. I was proud of my use of layers on this project.
I enjoyed learning so much about Storyline – a tool I didn't know before. I'll keep using it for making e-learning materials. My skills in designing curriculum really made this into a professional and useful tool. This training could be really useful for new teachers over a long period, helping them adjust to their new job.
