The 2019 migration patterns report released by Atlas Van Lines states that 13 U.S. states registered as outbound, 11 as inbound, and 26 as balanced (meaning the influx of people moving in and out of these states are more or less equal). Brad Beckett of the website RealInvestingToday.com initially made the report last January, says real estate professional Ron Cadman of Investar USA.
For almost 30 years now (since 1993), established American moving company Atlas Van Lines has been keeping tab of the movement of Americans by monitoring their interstate and cross-border (U.S.A. to Canada) migration patterns. This is as depicted in the moves being handled by Atlas, which has an estimated 500 agents working across the globe.
The interesting aspect of the report is that the data shows an overall decrease in movement among U.S. citizens from that of 2018, essentially saying that many Americans are choosing to stay put. Among the inbound states, Idaho tops the list, with 62.3% movers into it. The remaining states in the top 10 are Washington (60.5%), North Carolina (59.3%), New Mexico (59.0%), Tennessee (58.5%), Rhode Island (57.8%), Arizona (57.7%), Alabama (56.9%), District of Columbia (56.9%), and Texas (56.1%).
The top outbound state is New York, which comes in with a 2019 moving-out migration pattern of 62.7%. The Big Apple is followed by West Virginia (62.5%), South Dakota (61.7%), Illinois (61.4%), Louisiana (59.6%), New Jersey (57.9%), Delaware (57.3%), Nebraska (56.6%), Indiana (56.5%), and Connecticut (56.0%). Among the top balanced ones are Alaska, Utah, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Georgia, with the Yukon Territory topping the list for having no movement at all.
These migration patterns basically refer to human traffic flow by state or province both via cross-border and interstate, as mentioned above. Atlas Van Lines based the 2019 report on a total of 66,308 interstate household goods moves from January 1 to the 13th of December of last year, Ron Cadman explains.
