Our gallery is home to a vast collection of artworks that reflect the traditions, history, and spirit of our community. Charles Montojo, a renowned local artist, is the creative force behind many of the gallery's masterpieces. His works, ranging from intricate sculptures to vibrant paintings, are deeply rooted in the traditions and landscapes of Romblon. Charles' art captures the essence of local life, making the gallery a true reflection of the community’s spirit.
Charles M. Montojo was born into a religious and hardworking family. He was the second of three children of the late J. Simplicio Madrid Montojo and Felisa Martinez Morales. Born on December 18, 1938, during the third night of the traditional Simbang Gabi, he was baptized by Monsignor Leon Patahunan in the Catholic rite as “Carlos,” following the church tradition of naming the child after a saint. His parents raised him in the Catholic faith, instilling in him a love for God and a simple family life.
After graduating from high school in 1955, Charles went to Manila, accompanied by his cousin, to take the entrance examination at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). He passed the exam and enrolled in the College of Fine Arts. During the first semester of his first year in college, his talent in sculpture was noticed by his Italian professor, Francesco R. Monti, who took Charles under his wing as a protégé.
