On our first day of classes back in August 2019, my classmates and I handed over our tickets to ride the roller coaster that is PA school. We buckled our seatbelts, held on tight, and zoomed right off into the distance. Along we went, up then down, swerving left then right. Block 4 came along, and the roller coaster suddenly came to a screeching halt. A switch in wires. A malfunction. COVID-19.
COVID-19 brought a wave of uncertainty for me and my classmates. How will we learn? How will we practice our clinical skills? Is online PA school even possible? We wanted the answers to these questions, but nobody had them. The situation was new to us all, both faculty and students. With time, our questions would be answered one by one.

Right away, our program made transitioning to virtual curriculum its top priority. They worked endlessly to provide us with high quality education and a seamless online experience. Live classes continued to be held virtually without missing a beat. Our faculty even made it possible to have a SIM lab virtually and our OSCEs became virtual telehealth visits. How fitting given the direction that healthcare is heading!
The opportunity to learn in your PJs might sound like a positive perk of online learning. While there is some truth to that (well, maybe a lot of truth), there are two sides to the coin. To PA students, COVID-19 presented a new and different challenge. Time management, productivity, and independent learning came to the forefront of our learning experience. It became more important than ever to build a study schedule and stick to it. There was no room to fall behind and it was up to us to hold ourselves accountable for our learning.
I will never forget the first time. My son had just been diagnosed and was only 5 years old. He asked me if we could buy him some medicine to make him the same as all the other boys in kindergarten. He asked the question as if he was asking for a cookie. He believed that his father and I could fix anything. Until that point, we probably felt the same way. We were blown away by how helpless we felt when he was first diagnosed. Looking back, it was a very dark time for us. I cried almost every day and read anything I could online about Tourette Syndrome.

If you accept this mission you must decide on a number of factors. You are responsible for setting the controls for the height of hill #1, hill #2, the size of the loop, the initial speed of the coaster, its mass, the gravity at work and the amount of friction on the track.

Much of my education seems like a roller coaster ride in retrospect. I walked into my kindergarten classroom feeling like a child paying his ticket on his first big fair ride. My days were spent playing, reciting the alphabet, and counting to ten. By the time I started first grade, I felt like a fish out of water in a very structured classroom run by an ambitious teacher with high expectations for academics. My long struggle had begun.
My elementary school days were spent doing the best I could to understand and deliver what was asked of me in all subjects. After school my parents found themselves struggling to help me understand content. Like the plunging lows of a roller coaster, there were many nights I cried in frustration and fatigue because I could not solve math problems.
In the end, I hope all those out there with learning disabilities acquire what is needed for them to hang on during their own roller coaster ups and downs. I will continue to double check calculations and look twice at numbers, and I doubt that math will ever come easily or fail to produce some amount of anxiety for me. But I will also continue to hang on.
