As expected, an open protocol called DIAL is supported by both the Netflix and YouTube applications. This enables you to cast phone or tablet videos onto your screen. To do so, merely launch on your smartphone your YouTube or Netflix app and tap the cast icon. If you want to cast YouTube from your laptop to Roku, it also operates the same way.

To begin with, make sure you activate the screen mirroring option, which is on by default normally. However, you can navigate to Settings > System > Screen Mirroring on your Roku to make sure it is set to Prompt or always. Finally, make sure both the Roku and the device you are using to cast are to the same wireless network.

On Windows

1. If you want to mirror Roku with your Windows screen, attach it to the same Wi-Fi network as your Roku and click the notifications button at the bottom right of the taskbar

2. There you would see several alternatives, look for and pick connect to a wireless

3. You'd see a list of accessible projection systems, select Roku

4. And you'd also receive a prompt on Roku to allow the unit to project

5. Now, if you are playing any video on your browser or local storage, it should stream

Android

1. For versions 4.2 and above, Android added support for Miracast and eventually canceled it for its proprietary Google Cast

2. Luckily, you can still use the Miracast protocol to cast the screen of your Phone on Roku

3. Just go to Settings > Show > Cast Screen

4. Tap the upper right corner, which is the menu button, and click on Activate Wireless Display

5. From there, you can go back to Settings and choose Cast Screen
