The career I have decided to pursue is marine engineering. I chose this path at a young age because I have always loved the water and knew that I wanted to be around it as I grew up. I have always been curious about how things work, often taking things apart, little things around the house, to see how they work. My older sister has always been my hero, and I looked up to her; she wanted to be an engineer when she grew up. I wanted to be just like her. This admiration sparked my interest, but I discovered that I also loved using my brain to its fullest capacity, which is why engineering excites me.
I am currently completing my first quarter in high school, taking an engineering class. I hope to be exempted from the two-year engineering program. I have attended a graphic communications class, which has helped me design many things. This experience will aid me in developing new ideas in the future. I am good at math and finding solutions to my problems. I excel at problem-solving and enjoy making things with my hands. My sisters and I like working together to create things that improve our home. I work hard as a team player and collaborate effectively with others on projects to achieve the goals that I set for myself.
I am involved in various extracurricular activities. I played soccer for my high school and am currently a member of the dance team. These teams have taught me the importance of following instructions and executing them to the best of my ability without hesitation. I have learned valuable lessons in teamwork, leadership, and humility, as well as how to set and achieve my personal goals. When my older sister was home, she loved doing arts and crafts, such as painting and building things. I always did them with her, but now I make my own jewelry. I like sewing with weirs and bedes; they taught me how to work with my hands and to be steady and precise and to pay attention to detail. I have never been hired for a job, but I help my dad cut the grass. My father has always told me to be careful because if I don’t pay attention, I could hurt myself very badly. This experience has taught me to be cautious with things I work with that could cause harm.
After high school, I want to attend Louisiana State University (LSU) because they have an excellent engineering program, and it is a Division One school for soccer. The idea of going to a university to study what excites me most while also playing soccer for the university is amazing to me. My father attended LSU as well, and I have family in the area. While I am a student at LSU, I hope to work as an apprentice for an engineering company to gain some experience that I can include in my e-portfolio. My goal is to be hired as an engineer. I plan to seek a job as an engineer during my senior year, before graduating from university. I don't want to wait until I graduate to start looking for work, as that would not be a good position for me to be in.
I aim to positively impact my community by creating safer ships for our military and fishermen, allowing them to work without fear of accidents. I also want to develop better-fitting scuba gear for deeper ocean exploration and potential disease discoveries. Additionally, I plan to enhance the safety of submarines to reduce implosion risks.
Ultimately, I envision a society that is less fearful of the oceans and more adventurous in exploring them. My goal is to eliminate ocean waste and restore marine environments by finding affordable, accessible alternatives to plastic that people will prefer.
