Dr. Rohit Varma, M.D., professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, and chief of the Ocular Oncology Service at the University of California, Davis/Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sacramento, is internationally known for his research on age-related macular degeneration and other causes of vision loss. An attending physician in Ophthalmology at both the UCLA Medical Center and the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Varma is world renowned for his pioneering vision research and surgical contributions in the fields of glaucoma, macular degeneration and other retinal conditions. A native of India, Dr. Varma came to the United States in 1989 after serving as director of ophthalmology at King George's Hospital in Lucknow. He completed a residency and post-doctoral fellowship at UCLA before assuming the role Dr. Rohit Varma is the William Murphy Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. A glaucoma specialist, Dr. Rohit Varma has research interests in glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, lacrimal biology and therapeutics and age-related macular degeneration.
He is the author of over 70 original research articles and book chapters about Ocular Therapeutics and Glaucoma and also lectures extensively throughout the world on these topics.
Dr. Rohit Varma, M.D., Ph.D., FRCS is the president of Sight Conservation Expanded, a nonprofit organization he founded in 2010. SCIE works to prevent avoidable blindness and increase access to eye care for people with limited access to care, focusing on programs in Africa and Southeast Asia. Dr. Varma also serves as the co-founder and chair of an advisory committee on eye health for the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and is a member of the boards of directors of CURE International (formerly known as Children's Urgent Relief and Education Fund) and OneSight.
Dr. Rohit Varma was remembered for his role in turning the USC Eye Institute into a leading center for research and treatment of eye disease, from its founding in 2003 until his death last September from brain cancer. The second floor of the institute is named after him. Rohit Varma, M.D. PhD, is the Chukka Sachdev Professor of Ocular Research and director of the Cornea Service at the Wilmer Eye Institute, part of Johns Hopkins Medicine, in Baltimore. He is also associate dean for strategic planning at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Rohit Varma, MD, MPH, founder of the Southern California Eye Institute (SCEI), member of the CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Centre, is an ophthalmologist who specializes on the care of glaucoma and cataracts. He has arisen as a specialist in optic nerve modifications, notably as it applies to glaucoma pathology. His prior study included the advancement of imaging methods to diagnose injury to the glaucomatous optic nerve early in the disease's path. Dr. Rohit Varma has performed a key role in the creation of modern sensors and drainage systems for implantable intraocular pressure (IOP) in current history.
