Oil Painting of "Finch Maple"
My fine art practice is an exploration of where technical precision meets the artist's perspective. Drawing from my career in geology, I seek to capture the nature of the land, such as the rugged austere beauty I often discover during field work.
I work across multiple mediums to draw upon the depth of beauty often found in untamed areas of the American West. My process is driven by dyslexic thinking—a natural aptitude for spatial reasoning and pattern recognition that allows me to deconstruct complex landscapes into their most essential, emotional movements.
Every major work begins with a moment of exploration. I use soft pastels to translate my first impressions of color and light onto paper. If a study captures the essence of the subject, it becomes the catalyst for an oil painting—a physical evolution of the same story told through a different medium.
Several original pieces and prints can be purchased from my Etsy Shop, RogueHorseFineArt. Other available pieces and prints are indicated in descriptions and please contact me for purchase.

Archival Giclée Fine Art Prints
Because art should be accessible without compromising quality, I offer professional Giclée reproductions of select pieces.
To preserve the nature of the original work, each piece is printed on heavyweight, archival watercolor paper. This acid-free, textured medium mimics the feel of the original painting, providing a soft, matte finish that handles light beautifully. These museum-grade prints are produced using lightfast inks to ensure your investment maintains its vibrant color and clarity for generations.
Museum-Grade Texture: Printed on premium, textured water color paper for an authentic, fine-art feel.
Archival Longevity: Acid-free materials designed to resist fading and yellowing over time.
Curated Selection: Available for select oil, pastel, and watercolor works.
Whether it is a specific geological vista that holds meaning to you, or a portrait of a beloved animal, I accept a limited number of fine art commissions annually. Please reach out to discuss your vision and current lead times.
Textured, vibrant, and light-filled impressions.
Working with soft pastels allows for my intuition to help guide the design of initial pieces. My favorite soft pastel mediums include PanPastels and stick pastels, which by their nature make it difficult to achieve fine detail. The use of these mediums are intentional, as they force me to study the gestural qualities and shapes of the piece so that I may produce something that isn't tight, but rather loose. Free. Full of emotion. As a finishing touch, I'll use soft pastel pencils to give a piece intentional detail where needed. These pieces emphasize vibrancy and the fleeting, atmospheric qualities of the American West and personalities of animal subjects.

Deep texture and timeless atmospheric perspective.
My oil works focus on the weight and permanence of the landscape, portraits, and still-lifes, utilizing grisaille and alla prima or layering techniques to capture the dramatic interplay of light and shadow found in the wild spaces of Montana and Washington. I often integrate some common practices used by soft pastel artists into my oil paintings - under-painting techniques, color choices, echoes, and gestural strokes. As an end result, these practices make for more lively, vibrant, and coherent oil paintings.
