For flights, the Rockville PRO-M50 is my top pick because its closed-back design and hard case offer the sound isolation and portability travelers need. The Rockville PRO-E70 takes the runner-up spot if you prioritize a lighter weight and slightly wider frequency range for critical listening on the go.
• Rockville PRO-M50 — best for travel and noisy environments; pick this if you need maximum sound isolation, interchangeable comfort cushions, and a protective hard case for your journey.
• Rockville PRO-E70 — best for studio work and casual home use; pick this if you want a lightweight build with deep bass response and a soft carrying pouch that fits easily in a bag.
• Rockville PRO-E90 — best for professional mixing and mastering; pick this if you require an open acoustic signature for detailed stereo imaging and have access to a dedicated headphone amplifier.
The Rockville PRO-M50 SR Studio Headphones are built with a specific mission: to deliver studio-grade audio quality while remaining rugged enough for life outside the studio. For a traveler or a commuter, the most defining feature here is the enclosure itself. The tight-sealing ear cups create a physical barrier against the roar of airplane engines or city traffic, making these an excellent choice for anyone seeking a quiet bubble in a chaotic world.
Comfort is a major selling point for this model, especially when you consider how long a flight can feel. The swiveling ear cups accommodate various head shapes, and the inclusion of two sets of ear cushions—soft suede and leather—allows you to customize the fit based on your personal preference or the season. The soft leather headband distributes pressure evenly, which is crucial when wearing them for hours during a long-haul trip. You won't find yourself constantly adjusting the clamping force, as the design prioritizes a snug yet forgiving seal that keeps noise out without causing fatigue.
Durability and versatility round out the package. The stainless steel headband and arms are constructed to withstand the bumps and jostles of travel, while the detachable coiled cable offers flexibility. Perhaps most importantly for a traveler, it comes with a hard leather carrying case. This isn't just a soft pouch; it is a rigid shell designed to protect the headphones from being crushed by luggage, ensuring they arrive at your destination exactly as they left yours.

The main trade-off with the PRO-M50 is its wired nature and lack of active noise cancellation electronics. You will not get battery-powered features here, but instead rely on passive isolation and high-quality analog signal transmission. If you prefer wireless freedom, this might not be the right tool, but for pure audio fidelity and reliable performance without worrying about charging, it stands out. In my opinion, this is the ideal rockville over-ear headphones option for flights because the combination of sound blocking and physical protection makes it the most practical companion for air travel.
The Rockville PRO-E70 represents a refined approach to studio monitoring, focusing on precision and portability. The 10-degree offset driver angle enhances stereo imaging, placing instruments and vocals exactly where they should be in the soundscape. It feels noticeably lighter than heavier studio monitors, reducing neck strain during long commutes or extended listening sessions.
Like the M50, the PRO-E70 utilizes a closed-back circumaural design, which helps contain sound within the ear cups and prevents leakage into the environment. This makes them suitable for recording environments or shared spaces like airplanes, though the isolation relies entirely on the physical seal of the memory foam and protein leather pads rather than electronic assistance. The memory foam cushions conform to your ears quickly, providing a comfortable fit that stays secure even if you shift positions frequently. The replaceable slip-on ear pads mean you can maintain that comfort level indefinitely, replacing worn sections without needing to buy a whole new pair.
Connectivity is straightforward and robust, featuring a detachable 3-meter oxygen-free copper cable that ensures a clean signal path. The included 1/4-inch adapter makes it easy to plug into various audio interfaces or mixers, whether you are at home or in a hotel room setting up a quick session. However, the packaging differs from the M50; it comes with a soft cloth carrying case. While this is more compact and easier to stuff into a side pocket of a backpack, it offers less crush protection than a hard shell. If you are tossing your headphones into a checked bag, the PRO-E70 requires a bit more care regarding physical impact compared to its sturdier sibling.
This makes them incredibly versatile for the modern user who switches between different sources throughout the day. The trade-off is that the open-back version of this series might offer better airiness for some, but the closed design of the E70 sacrifices a tiny bit of that natural openness for superior isolation. I recommend the PRO-E70 for those who want a balance of high-fidelity sound and a featherlight build, perfect for a headset for flights where weight matters as much as audio quality.
The Rockville PRO-E90 steps into a different category entirely with its semi-open-back design. This architectural choice fundamentally changes how sound behaves, offering a more expansive and airy listening experience that closely mimics the acoustics of a room. Because the ear cups allow some airflow, you gain a sense of space and depth that closed-back models simply cannot replicate. This makes the PRO-E90 an exceptional tool for professionals who need to hear the subtle interplay of frequencies in a track to make precise adjustments.
However, this openness comes with a caveat regarding privacy and isolation. Since the back of the ear cups is not sealed, sound leaks out, and external noise can leak in. While the design still minimizes excessive bleed compared to fully open models, it is not suitable for noisy environments like airplanes or busy coffee shops. On a flight, you would likely hear the hum of the engine through the cups, and people sitting near you could hear your music leaking out. Therefore, this product is best reserved for controlled environments where you can focus entirely on the audio without distraction.
The build quality remains consistent with the other models, featuring memory foam cushions, a stainless steel headband, and swivel ear cups for comfort. The included accessories are premium, including a detachable 10-foot OFC copper cable, which gives you plenty of slack to move around a studio setup, and a hardcase with a fabric finish that looks professional and durable. The sensitivity of 102 dB ensures that even with the higher 80-ohm impedance, the headphones can produce loud volumes, though they may benefit from a dedicated headphone amp to truly unlock their potential.
If you are looking for a waterproof gaming headset for flights, the PRO-E90 is not the answer, nor is it designed for that purpose. Its strength lies in its ability to reveal details that other headphones hide. The trade-off is clearly the lack of isolation and the requirement for a higher-power source to drive the 80-ohm load effectively. I view the PRO-E90 as a specialist's tool. It is for the person who needs to hear the smallest hiss in a vocal track or the faintest reverb tail. While it is fantastic for home studio work, it falls short of being a general-purpose travel companion due to its acoustic transparency.
We compared published specs and features across the three models to determine which best serves specific needs. The ranking is our independent editorial opinion based on design, durability, and intended use cases. No brand paid for placement, and no third-party endorsements influenced this selection.
The Rockville PRO-M50 is the best choice for flights due to its closed-back design which blocks out engine noise and its hard case for protection. The PRO-E70 is also viable for travel if you prioritize lightness, but the PRO-E90 is not recommended due to sound leakage.
Yes, all three models feature replaceable ear pads. The PRO-M50 includes both suede and leather options initially, while the PRO-E70 and PRO-E90 come with slip-on memory foam pads that can be swapped out for continued comfort.
