Learning to fly has never been easier! The club uses the AeroScout S 2 1.1m RTF Basic with SAFE from Horizon Hobby We purchased two of these planes for training purposes as they are rugged and beginner friendly. Using Spektrum's wireless trainer ability (buddy boxing) we are able to teach new students how to fly virtually risk free. The Aeroscouts have Spektrum's SAFE technology built into the receiver. SAFE® (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology from Spektrum™ changes everything by making RC flight just as fun for the beginner as it is for the expert. How? Using a combination of sensors and flight control software, Spektrum SAFE technology can make an RC aircraft aware of its attitude relative to the ground. This ‘attitude awareness’ makes it possible to program aircraft with different levels of assistance pilots can choose from based on their level of experience and needs during the flight. Custom-tuned for fixed or rotary-wing aircraft, this evolutionary combination of multi-axis sensors and software makes the aircraft intelligent enough to understand its flight attitude. This groundbreaking spatial awareness means that roll and pitch can be limited while flight stability is enhanced and freedom of control is preserved. Its multiple flight mode selection allows the pilot to instantly choose a level of envelope protection that suits the moment. The result is that beginners have a far more relaxing learning experience, and experts get outstanding control with protection benefits accessible at the flip of a switch. SAFE technology allows an RC model to be aware of its attitude relative to the horizon. This attitude awareness is key to SAFE technology’s three core benefits: Flight Envelope Protection, Multiple Flight Modes, and Smoother Flight Capability. How the wireless trainer (buddy box) works:
The instructor will have a Spektrum radio and will be designated the instructor. The student will also have a Spektrum radio and will be designated the student. The instructor has the ability to assign or remove channels for the student to control (throttle, ailerons, elevator, and rudder). The radios will be setup for wireless trainer (buddy box) so that the instructor can give the student the channels he/she deems appropriate or take control of the airplane in case the student is having problems or the instructor deems it necessary to do so. This is done via a switch on the instructor's radio (and at any time the instructor can take immediate control by merely moving a flight channel on their radio). After taking control and once the instructor has the aircraft in a safe condition they can hand control back to the student by flipping the switch on their radio. It has never been easier to learn how to fly!
