Artist Statement

Pictures of Lily is a mixed media painting on canvas whose theme is based on a song with the same title by the band The Who. The subjects depicted in the piece are typical still-life objects that act as pictorial metaphors for the story described in the song. Even some lyrics are written in Italics throughout the image to assist the viewer's eye throughout the seemingly disjointed, idiosyncratic configuration. I designed the composition in such a manner due to my experimentation with painting various objects from multiple vantage points. This approach stems from the Cubist method of painting their subjects from multiple viewpoints within the same image. This allows the artist to skew the conventions of traditional linear and 3-point perspective often employed in traditional realism.
