Very basic or non-existent knowledge of musical language, composition, mixing, and/or Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) workflow.
Music is often simple, disjointed, unorganized, and/or lacking texture, quality, groove, melody, rhythm, etc, and does not sound cohesive nor full.
Little to no mixing or mastering work is done. Stock VSTs without EQ or texturing are present.
Little to no layering is present, simple music with very few separate tracks.
Some knowledge of basic musical terminology, like note names, chords, mixing terms.
An adequate understanding of their DAW workflow.
Music can be composed with thought and care, organized phrasing with sections (like verse, chorus, bridge), as well as minor texturing, groove, compositional awareness.
Attempts in mixing and mastering with the use of simple EQs, compressors, limiters, reverb.
An understanding of using a small collection of sound libraries/VSTs.
Developed musical vocabulary, understanding of musical concepts like phrasing, chord shapes, compositional techniques, and proficient in their DAW of choice.
Music is well composed with intention, comprising multiple layers, instruments, sections, and/or compositional devices.
An understanding of how to appropriately use a large collection of sound libraries/VSTs.
Music contains very good mixing!
Good mixing has a result of proper balancing, fullness, and clarity.
Examples include:
Excellent use of compressors, EQ, multiband, FX, automation, and mastering techniques. Make sure to listen for clipping, balance, and gain!
Must provide 2 genres of music.
Cannot get SFX 3 with only 1 genre (such as orchestral, EDM, DnB).
Examples include Orchestral and EDM, DnB and Jazz, Rock and Ambience.
Subgenres will generally still count as one genre unless it is vastly different.
Includes all attributes of SFX 3, in addition to the following;
A well developed catalogue of music.
Must provide at least 3 genres of music (Ambience, Orchestral, Rock, Etc)
Extensive experience doing work in different genres.
Ability to answer most, if not all, questions about their work.
Mastery of their workflow and process.
Experience writing music for studios or commissions (optional)
The guidelines for sound designers will differ from those used for musicians. Since sound design typically requires less time and effort than composing or writing a full song, the requirements will reflect that by asking for more than just two or three examples.
The use of libraries is allowed under certain circumstances. The library must be Creative Commons Zero (CC0), Creative Commons One (CC1), or otherwise open-source. The most common library you may encounter in tickets is FreeSound.
Stolen, reused, copied, plagiarized, non-transformative, or otherwise unoriginal sounds are strictly prohibited. Anyone caught using stolen sounds will be blacklisted and may also face a ban.
Users MUST show videos of their workstation (DAW)
We do NOT take arrangements (such as covers) of already existing pieces into account during ranking, unless there is a shift in genre/a noticeable difference.
Composition will be better in levels 3 and 4, but the most important thing between being ranked SFX 2 and SFX 3 is the quality of the mixing.
