The Press of Robert LoMascolo is located in the idyllic cider woods of Aurora, New York. Aurora is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region and borders Cayuga Lake.
At the Press of Robert LoMascolo we know that it’s our process and attention to detail that makes our work truly special. For every project we will chose the most appropriate processes, but whenever possible we try to use freshly cast metal type and traditional letterpress printing. No matter what we are making, we start with a lengthy and through design process. If you’re looking for a custom look, we are happy to work with you to make your vision a reality. In general, we do all of our primary design work on the computer, this allows us to provide an accurate digital representations of the work before we even begin printing. Even though we may design on the computer, this doesn’t mean that it’s a fast or easy job. Good design takes time, and we start each project from scratch, not from templates.
For art work our non-metal typefaces we are able to work with a couple of businesses to have a variety of different kinds of printing plates made for the purpose. For metal type, we are pleased to offer freshly cast English Monotype through The Press & Letterfoundry of Michael & Winifred Bixler. Metal type not only has a historically authentic appeal, but metal typefaces are visually superior to their digital counterparts.
Needless to say, having type cast for our projects is an exciting possibility, but it is also a lengthy and highly skilled process. Type casting equipment is considered a rare antique, and running it requires patience and knowledge. Every single letter and space is cast one at a time.
Letterpress printing offers a classic and sophisticated look, the visual impression from the type gives the printed matter a tactile nature. Compared to modern printing methods, letterpress offers a unique and special appeal, but it also is a time consuming process. Every sheet must be feed into the press by hand and printed one at a time. Each additional color represents an additional time through the press. For large runs, over a thousand, we can speed up the process somewhat by using an automatic feeding press, however the setup time on theses more complicated presses make them impractical for short runs.
We can also offer a variety of hand bookbinding and kindred services. All to make sure that our finished product is exactly what you wanted.
Even though all of our processes require skill and patience, we strive to keep our products competitively priced and of the highest quality and sophistication. Please don’t hesitate to contact us, and we will work with you to make it happen.
