He completed his high school education at Mahopac High School in New York City in 1984 and pursued further studies at SUNY Oneonta. 1988 he graduated, having studied history, economics, and foil fencing. Goetschkes' thirst for knowledge propelled him to earn a Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and a Field Endorsement in Secondary Social Sciences.
Goetschkes' indomitable spirit was evident throughout his education and career. He worked multiple part-time jobs year-round and self-financed his college education. This determined mindset accompanied him throughout his academic journey and during his 11-year tenure in the U.S. Coast Guard. 2002 he achieved a remarkable milestone by gaining admission to the prestigious Alpha Sigma Lambda Honors Fraternity.
After college, Robert Goetschkes sought to extend his educational endeavors beyond U.S. borders and joined the U.S. Peace Corps. Serving in Tonga for two and a half years, he immersed himself in community-based service, fostering connections, nurturing relationships, and giving back to the global community. His travels to countries such as India, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji provided him with a worldwide perspective that enriched his ability to shape the minds of hundreds of students over his illustrious 25-year teaching career.
Goetschkes answered the call of duty and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the first Gulf War, garnering well-deserved recognition for his commitment. Among the honors and awards he received during his Coast Guard service were the USO General Dynamics Community Service Award in 1995, the Navy League Award for Outstanding Military Service in 1996, two consecutive Good Conduct Awards from the USCG in 2000, and the National Ski Patrol 10 Year Service Award in 2017. Goetschkes holds his military medals and awards in high regard, as they embody the experiences that shaped his character and identity.

Presently, Robert Goetschkes devotes his time and expertise to the Leeward Light Charitable Foundation, where he serves as a warehousing professional. The foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, manages and oversees charitable thrift stores across New England. All profits are reinvested into the community through donations to various charities and foundations. Goetschkes, although retired from teaching, maintains an active role in giving back to the community, aligning with his steadfast commitment to meaningful engagement. Since 2009, the Leeward Light Charitable Foundation has donated over $3 million to support local charities in New England, primarily focusing on providing sustenance, clothing, and comfort to needy community members.
