2017 – Present: Senior TB Technical Advisor, FHI 360, Pretoria, South Africa

Providing technical assistance in the implementation (design, preparation of work plans, budgets, implementation schedules, monitoring and evaluation) of interventions to prevent, diagnose and treat childhood and adult TB, TB/HIV and MDR TB in supported countries. Strengthening linkages between TB and HIV programs in FHI 360 programs in supported countries. Contributing to business development for TB, TB/HIV and drug-resistant TB opportunities. Support the programmatic, administrative and financial systems of projects for effective management and monitoring of programs.

2016 – 2017: Chief of Party, Tuberculosis South Africa Project, USAID, Pretoria, South Africa

Overall leadership of flagship USAID TB project in South Africa. Led the annual project planning cycle (work plan development, budget, monitoring and evaluation), supervised field and administrative staff, including recruitment of staff and consultants, and provided oversight on the execution of technical assistance contracts. Led communication with USAID, the Government and other key stakeholders, contributed to national policy development as a member of the national TB Think Tank and other technical working groups.

2016 – 2017: Team Lead, Public-Private Partnerships and Key Populations, Tuberculosis South Africa Project, USAID, Pretoria, South Africa

Led a Grant Under Contract team to develop strategies to increase the role of local NGOs in addressing TB at community level. Oversaw a public-private partnership (PPP) team to develop strategies to improve public-private collaboration in addressing TB in the business sector. Member of the national TB/HIV Steering Committee on TB in the mines. Coordinated with the National TB Program and Provincial Departments of Health to identify project technical assistance needs. Provided technical inputs on project portfolios including MDR TB decentralization, training, social mobilization, and PPP approaches.

2012 – 2016: Senior Regional TB and MDR TB Advisor, TB CARE II, USAID, Lilongwe, Malawi and Pretoria, South Africa

Provided technical support to USAID-funded TB CARE II Project in Malawi and South Africa, including strengthening collaborative TB/HIV activities and programmatic management of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB). Led technical support teams to coordinate activities on TB in the mining sector in Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Supported the development of training programs on TB and lung health for mining health officers, policy and guidelines to improve access to TB services for miners, ex-miners and mining communities, and operational studies and surveys.

2007 – 2012: TB/HIV Scientific Officer, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana

Provided technical support in the development of PEPFAR TB/HIV activities in Botswana. Monitored and evaluated project performance and budgets of 14 PEPFAR‐funded TB/HIV implementing partners, coordinated the compilation of PEPFAR semi‐annual and annual progress reports. Participated as co‐investigator or member of technical working group on various operational research projects and evaluations. Served as a member of the US Government interagency technical working groups on TB/HIV and on Care and Support, and on other national HIV care and support committees.

2003 – 2007: Medical Officer, World Health Organization (WHO) African Regional Office, Harare, Zimbabwe

Provided technical support to implement and monitor the DOTS strategy, TB/HIV collaborative activities and community‐based TB interventions in the WHO Southern and Eastern African epidemiological bloc. Led national TB program reviews, the development of national TB strategic plans and management guidelines, and of country proposals to the Global Fund. Led a team to support the Government of Nigeria to host the Special Summit of the African Union on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria in Abuja in May 2006.

1998 – 2003: Company Medical Officer, Hippo Valley Estates Ltd, Chiredzi, Zimbabwe

Performed district level clinical duties at the Company clinic and at the District Hospital. Coordinated the Company’s STI/HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programme and the TB control programme, the schools’ HIV/AIDS awareness campaign and HIV peer educators programme. Introduced voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) and prevention of mother‐to‐child transmission (PMTCT) programmes for employees and dependents, and a Wellness Clinic for employees.

1993 – 1998: Assistant Director of Health Services, Harare City Health Department, Harare, Zimbabwe

Led the City’s TB program, developing and implementing strategies for promoting health and preventing major communicable diseases, including TB. Supervised health information system for TB, including data management and analysis, producing reports on the trends of TB and other infectious diseases in Harare. Coordinated the provision and supervision of clinical care of patients in the city’s two infectious diseases hospitals and 21 clinics, Participated as co-investigator on several clinical and operational studies.

Additional Experience

2017 – Present: Member, Technical Review Panel (TRP), Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund), Geneva, Switzerland

Serve as TB expert on TRP that reviews funding requests for technical soundness in line with the Global Fund’s 2017-2022 Strategy: impact, building resilient and sustainable systems for health, promoting and protecting human rights and gender equality, effectiveness and efficiency of program implementation through shared ownership and mutual accountability, and sustainability and co-financing.

2003 – 2006: Part-time Lecturer, Department of Community Medicine, College of Health Sciences, University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe

Presented lectures on a voluntary basis on modules on the programmatic management of public health challenges, with a focus on infectious diseases and tuberculosis.

2000 – 2003: Part-time co-facilitator, Applied Epidemiology for Tuberculosis Control, The Union, Paris, France

Co-facilitated at three courses of The Union’s applied epidemiology course, attended by TB experts and program managers from high-burden countries and from technical and funding organizations. Contributed to the finalization of the online version of the course, and to the scale up of different iterations of EpiData packages for data collection, management and analysis.

1998 – 2002: Technical consultancies, World Health Organization, Africa Regional Office, Harare, Zimbabwe

Served as a WHO short-term technical consultant and conducted a rapid assessment of the TB situation and program performance in Liberia and participated in the national TB program review in Ghana.

1995 – 2003: Member, Zimbabwe National TB Expert Committee, Harare, Zimbabwe

Served as a member of the committee that provided strategic oversight and guidance to the programmatic management of tuberculosis in Zimbabwe, including guidance on the development, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of interventions.
