Robert Makombe, MBChB, MSc, is a medical doctor and public health practitioner with over 25 years of experience working in the areas of TB and TB/HIV control. He joined FHI 360 in 2017 as a Tuberculosis Technical Expert based in the East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) in Pretoria, South Africa. He has worked in diverse low-resource settings across sub-Saharan Africa in TB and TB/HIV prevention, treatment and care issues and with infectious diseases common to the region. Dr. Makombe is experienced in both the public and private sectors and has held assignments with international bilateral and multilateral organizations, establishing productive partnerships with national, international, and local stakeholders, including senior government officials, the business community, civil society and international funding partners. He has specific technical expertise in TB/HIV collaborative services, clinical and programmatic aspects of adult TB, community-based implementation of TB services, TB in key populations, public-private partnerships for TB elimination, and Global Fund planning and implementation. Dr. Makombe received the Sir Winston Churchill Memorial Scholarship to study for his medical degree at the University of Zimbabwe, and the Sir Alfred Beit Scholarship for his post-graduate degree at the University of Edinburgh. He is a serving member of the Global Fund’s Technical Review Panel, where he serves as a TB expert.
