My Cigars
Enrico Garzaroli has said that he has one simple goal with Graycliff cigars: to create the ultimate cigar. I’m not sure that a perfect cigar exists, but Graycliff Double Espresso gets pretty damn close. The Graycliff Espresso line has been a best-seller for years, and with this follow-up, Graycliff has released a single-size extension that brings the blend to bold new places.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: this is a full-bodied blend with a high-octane kick. If that’s your cup of tea, stick with me. We’ve got a dark, oily Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper with a core of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan long-fillers. Light it up and you’ll be greeted with coffee, chocolate, spice, earth, and a natural sweetness. Double down your Espresso game, and get this cigar in your life.
One thing I find utterly amazing ( and slightly annoying ) about the cigar industry is their repeated signs of respect and honor to those who have made a contribution to the industry. Anniversaries, birthdays, death dates, fathers day amongst many other dates have all been used as reasons to dedicate a cigar to a specific event or person. The Graycliff Avelino 80th falls right into this category – this cigar was crafted and created specifically to honor Avelino Laras’s 80th birthday. When they were originally packaged, they were put in specially made humidors which were then signed by Avelino Lara himself. Made to celebrate his birthday, this special cigar was sold exclusively at the Graycliff Resort and Cigar Factory at a monstrous markup. A phantom cigar of types, it was never intended to see the global market.
You may be asking yourself, who is this Avelino Lara and why does he have a cigar that has been toted as “a melting pot of tobaccos that has created one of the richest and most complex flavor profiles out there”. Okay – bullshit advertising aside, this is an ultra-premium cigar that is made from a combination of Nicaraguan, Honduran, Brazilian, and Costa Rican long-filler tobacco that has been slowly aged in ‘Cuban Fashion’, some tobacco being as old as a 1995 harvest. Avelino Lara is the man behind the original Cuban Cohiba name and is the man behind the Bahamian rolled Graycliff Cigars so I must agree, if you are going to make a cigar to honor this gentleman then use the factory he created with some of the best possible tobaccos you can get your hands on.
This cigar is tucked into a gorgeous Brazilian Habano wrapper and was free of any defects. This cigar is filled with Cuban seed long leaves straight out of Nicaragua. It had an average draw and I had no burn problems the whole time. Upon lighting, you didn't really get anything too noticeable. It had a nice mellow smell with a little sweet whiff. The first half of the cigar tasted very similar. It was very sweet and smooth, with a few complex flavors that I couldn't quite put my thumb on. Maybe a hint of cocoa!? It did have a little spice at the end and it made the smoke awesome. It was really good and I enjoyed every inch of that cigar. I actually expected it to be a little stronger but it’s medium strength was actually kind of refreshing. It made the whole smoking experience relaxing and perfect after a big lunch. A nice medium cigar after lunch is a the best way to round off the day!
If you manage to find some of the Graycliff limited edition cigars, buy them. Buy lots of them.
Graycliff Profesionale Series is another top notch blend from Enrico Garzaroli’s brand. Now let’s be honest, for a cigar like this to justify the price point, it’s gotta be better than good. And that’s exactly what you get — a stogie that performs like a champ, and tastes even better, day in and day out. Graycliff Profensionale is a welcome addition to the Graycliff line.
Some of you may remember this cigar from back in the day, and I’m happy to report that it's back, and better than ever. An Ecuador Sumatra wrapper lays atop a four country blend of long-fillers, for a complex and unforgettable blend. A semi-sweet flavor of bready, earthy tobacco coats the palate, delivering wave after wave of flavor. I burnt this down to the nub, and I’m sure you will too.
Looks a bit rough, but fits the name. The flavors start out with dry cocoa and leather with a hint of sweetness. Develops some coffee notes about 1/3 in that turn into espresso by the 1/2 mark. This is highlighted by some dry cocoa.
Padilla Habano, mouthwatering ‘90’ rated blend. Many consider the Padilla Habano as Ernesto Padilla’s crowning achievement, and as his tour de force of tobacco blending. This cigar is top-notch and sure to reach legendary status among aficionados.
Arriving dressed in a gorgeous Ecuador habano wrapper, the blend is completed with a Cuban-seed Jalapa binder and Cuban-seed long-leaves from Condega and Esteli, Nicaragua. This premium handmade features tantalizing flavors of leather, wood, spice, pepper, and a hint of chocolate. This medium-bodied cigar is buttery and smooth with flawless construction and a pleasant clean finish. The overall experience is reminiscent of feistier Cuban cigars and will please today’s discerning aficionados.
His blend features a rich, patiently-fermented Corojo wrapper leaf that’s simply gorgeous – oily and toothy. The supremely-aged Honduran long-leaf fillers are plentiful, resulting in layers upon layers of deep, complex flavors including a toasty, coffee-like character and sweet creaminess, complemented by a pleasing charcoal aroma and medium-bodied profile.
Made in the time honored tradition of Ramon Cifuentes, Daniel Nunez created the Cifuentes seasonal blend to commemorate the rich history of Partagas that has spanned more than 160 years. Nunez is the Chief Operating Officer of General Cigar Company and one of the most respected tobacco men in the world. With brands like Partagas Black Label and Cohiba under his belt, Nunez considers the Cifunetes blends one of his greatest achievements.
Cifuentes are handmade in the Dominican Republic and are medium-bodied blends perfect for any occasion. The burn is clean and the draw is generous, lending to a thick, full flavor that exudes notes of wood, leather, and some spicy characters that last through the finish.
Ave Maria contains a massive amount of thick, Nicaraguan long leaves all masked by a premium Ecuadorian-grown Habano wrapper, fermented to perfection. The result creates a bold burst of leather and wood with light spices throughout that perfectly round out the finish. With an earthy aroma and some cedar notes on the finish, Ave Maria will easily satisfy most aficionados. Holy Grail (Salomon) (7.1"x58)
This 5×50 medium chocolate wrapped stick offered an excellent burn and perfect draw, lasting just under 1 hour to the band point. Flavors started a little on the mild side but woke up by the 1/2 way point to produce a nice medium body experience. Several transitions led to flavors including leather, sweetness, mild earthiness, pepper washes, cocoa and a warm mild coffee. A great anytime stick!
The more toned down side of Tatuaje.
El Triunfador is a new, mellow release from Tatuaje. Blended with a Habano wrapper from Ecuador and aged Nicaraguan long-fillers, El Triunfador provides plenty of flavor without too much body. With smooth notes of cedar, earth, coffee and a slightly spicy finish, El Triunfador is balanced and complex. Well made, expertly blended and supremely flavorful.
El Trianfador received a well-deserved 92-point rating, noting: "A gorgeously constructed, box-pressed belicoso with a perfect draw. Profound leather flavors are balanced by sweet cream and cocoa notes."
Romeo's Viejo is, for many customers, one of the top Romeo y Julieta blends there is. Its super-smooth, thick, slightly toothy maduro wrapper - grown in the famed San Andres Valley of Mexico - features an oily sheen and triple cap, while the subtle square-press presentation feels great in the hand and adds to the anticipation. The flavor is dependable and consistent throughout: mellow and smooth from start to finish, highlighted by some richness, hints of caramel and a faint sweet woody note. The aftertaste is very pleasant, while the draw is effortless. Of the myriad Romeo y Julieta blends, to me this gorgeous little number is hands-down the best.
In the "cigar community" (is it me or is there a "community" for everything these days?), Rocky Patel's Vintage Series of cigars have been blazing hot. For good reason. This Vintage '90 blend is nothing short of masterful: complex and smooth, with layer after layer of deep box-pressed flavor. Offered in 2 styles, Vintage 1990 and Vintage 1992. With each, the wrapper tobaccos are the key ingredient. In fact these wrappers are incredible. Let me explain:
Vintage 1990 is a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan Ligero draped in a tantalizing natural Broadleaf wrapper from Honduras. It's medium-bodied and box-pressed with a really enjoyable, complex smooth-rich flavor.
To accompany its spot within the world's Top 50 Cigars, Vintage 1990 received a '93' and '92' rating! "A pressed, attractive cigar with great oils and nice color. It's nutty, earthy and sweet, with a medium to full body. A finger burner."
Vintage 1992 boasts the identical Nicaraguan and Dominican ligero long-fillers as the 1990, with the variation being very dark 10 year old Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. It's medium-bodied and box-pressed with a creamy, nutty, and full flavor.
Great news! Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 received a 91-rating, noting: "A thick, medium-bodied cigar full of coffee and earth. It draws and burns evenly, taking on licorice flavors and a woody finish."
