Service Model for Tax Year 2024
For tax year 2024 all three Roanoke area sites will be using in-person method of tax preparation. Returns will be prepared following the IRS and TaxAide requirements for In-person service.
Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins will be accommodated if time allows.
2. How To Make An Appointment
The most convenient way to make your appointment is online at http://aarp.org/findtaxhelp - leave your email address and receive a reminder.
On-line appointments can be made beginning January 20.
Phone appointments can be made beginning January 27 at (540) 345-2820.
Please be patient as our appointment makers are swamped with calls - especially in January and early February.
No walk-in appointments may be made.
Multiple year returns may require a second appointment.
DO NOT call the Lions Center.
3. What You Must Bring
Social security card for everyone whose name appears on the return.
Photo ID for taxpayer who is present.
Prior year completed tax return.
All current year tax documents, i.e. W-2, 1099-R, SSA1099. Documents must be removed from their envelopes.
Mask or facial covering not required but strongly recommended.
4. Tax Preparation Process
On the day of your appointment, please arrive no more than 20 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. You will need to fill out an Intake and Interview Form. A volunteer counselor will review your documents and complete an interview based on the form and the documents you provide. After the interview, the volunteer will enter your return into the tax software. A second counselor will review your return. The counselor will print the return and review it with you. You will be asked to sign an authorization form after which the return will be electronically filed with the IRS.
*Note: Married taxpayers filing jointly must both be present to authorize filing of the return.
