1. Our Privacy Philosophy: Local First

Road Witness is designed with a local-first architecture. We believe your drive data belongs to you.

Road Witness does not automatically upload your videos, sensor data, or location history to any server or cloud service.

All recordings and app-related local data are stored directly on your device, either in internal storage or external storage, depending on your device and app settings.

2. Permissions and Data Usage

Road Witness requires certain Android permissions in order to provide automatic dashcam recording functionality.

Background Location Access

Road Witness may require access to your location data in the background, including when the app is not in the foreground or when the screen is off.

This permission is used for the app’s automatic recording feature. Road Witness may use speed-related location information to help determine when you are driving, so it can automatically start recording when a drive begins and stop recording when the drive ends.

This allows the app to work with minimal manual interaction, helping reduce distraction while driving.

If the speed overlay feature is enabled in settings, your current speed may be processed in real time and embedded as a visual overlay on recorded video.

Road Witness does not upload your location history to a server. The app does not use your location data for advertising or third-party tracking.

Camera

Road Witness uses the device camera to record dashcam video.

To function as a driving safety tool, the camera may remain active through an Android Foreground Service while recording, even if you switch to another app or turn off the screen.

This allows continuous recording during a drive.

Microphone

Audio recording is off by default.

If you explicitly enable audio recording in the app settings, Road Witness may record sound together with video. This may include traffic sounds, horns, sirens, voices, or other sounds near the device.

You can disable audio recording at any time in the app settings.

Physical Activity Recognition

Road Witness may use Android physical activity recognition to help detect whether the device appears to be in a vehicle.

This helps the app decide when to monitor for driving conditions and may help reduce unnecessary battery usage.

3. Data Storage and Sharing

Video Files

Recorded clips are saved locally on your device, typically in the following folder:

Storage location may vary depending on your Android version, device manufacturer, and app settings.

Sharing

Road Witness does not automatically share your recordings.

You are the sole owner of your recordings. You may choose to manually share videos using the standard Android sharing system, such as email, messaging apps, cloud storage apps, or other apps installed on your device.

When you share a video manually, the privacy practices of the app or service you share it with will apply.

Deletion

You can delete recordings at any time through the app’s Clips screen or by using your device’s file manager.

4. Third-Party Services

Road Witness may use third-party services that are provided by Google or other service providers.

Google Play Services

Road Witness may use Google Play Services for location-related features and activity detection.

Google Play Services may process data according to Google’s own privacy policies.

Google AdMob

Road Witness may display advertisements using Google AdMob.

AdMob may collect information such as Advertising ID, IP address, device information, and ad interaction data in order to provide and measure advertisements.

Road Witness does not directly sell your personal data.

5. Security

Road Witness does not maintain a central server database containing your recordings.

Your video recordings are stored locally on your device. Their security depends on the security of your device and storage.

We recommend using device-level protection, such as a PIN, password, fingerprint, or face unlock, to help protect your locally stored recordings.

Road Witness is not designed for children and is not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children.
