The new edition of Standard Highway Signs and Markings is currently in progress. Layouts for new and significantly revised signs in the 2009 MUTCD have been included in the 2012 Supplement to the 2004 Edition of Standard Highway Signs.

Additional files for signs not listed below are not being developed at this time. Development of the electronic files will resume at some future date following the release of the new edition of Standard Highway Signs and Markings.

The new edition of Standard Highway Signs will contain the details for all signs and pavement markings in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD, expanded sign design guidelines, and details for symbolic traffic and lane-control signal indications. It is taking some additional time to prepare the publication, and information is expected to be posted in the coming months.

The Federal Highway Administration has developed the design details of the signs added in the 2009 Edition of the MUTCD and signs whose designs have been modified in the 2009 MUTCD. The new designs are provided in the form of a Supplement to the 2004 Edition of Standard Highway Signs.

These links represent the current version of Standard Highway Signs and the 2012 Supplement to the 2004 Standard Highway Signs. The 2012 Supplement contains the new and revised sign designs adopted in the 2009 Edition of the MUTCD. Where a sign design is included in the 2012 Supplement, its previous design in the 2004 Standard Highway Signs is superseded. Together, these two documents are a companion to the 2009 Edition of the MUTCD.

Undimensioned, full-size layouts for selected signs are provided for use by sign fabricators in the electronic fabrication process. These full-size layouts are made available in vector-based PDF and EPS formats that can be used directly with electronic vinyl cutting equipment.

Traffic signs are Crown copyright. They are part of legislation (Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002, often referred to as TSRGD). The numbers in the image file names relate to the TSRGD numbering.

You may reproduce traffic-sign images free of charge and without having to seek permission, but you must reproduce them accurately and not in a misleading context (eg not on roadside billboards where they could mislead drivers). These signs are either yellow or fluorescent yellow in color and with the exception of a few signs are usually diamond shaped and sometimes have square or rectangular smaller signs or plaques associated with them. Most W series signs can also be found in with orange backgrounds, for temporary use in situations such as construction zones. Some of the temporary use signs are only for use in temporary situations.

The MUTCD's W3 series of signs is for warning signs relating to advance traffic controls such as speed limits and signals. As all situations are not covered, several states have their own standards in addition to the MUTCD. The MUTCD provides options for graphic and text signs.

The MUTCD specifies no children related signs in the W11 series. Several states have signs for situations as children at play as well as deaf and blind children. Some of these signs vary from state to state as there is no federal standard.

The MUTCD provides several signs in the W11 series dealing with pedestrians, transit, and aviation. Several states have additional signs for other types of vehicles and situations regarding vehicles not covered by the MUTCD.

The MUTCD does not provide signs in the W11 series dealing with driveways and entrances. Many states have their own sign standards dealing with these situations that they place in their own W11 series.

The MUTCD's W14 series of signs is for warning signs relating to dead end streets and no passing zones. As all situations are not covered, several states and local governments have additional signs for other types of situations not covered by the MUTCD.

The MUTCD's W19 series of signs is for warning signs relating to the end of a controlled access highway. As all situations are not covered, several states have their own standards in addition to the MUTCD.

The MUTCD's W25 series of signs is for warning signs oncoming traffic having an extended green signal at a traffic light. As all situations are not covered, several states have their own standards in addition to the MUTCD.

Night vision systems in vehicles are a new emerging technology. A crucial problem in active (laser-based) systems is distortion of images by saturation and blooming due to strong retroreflections from road signs. We quantify this phenomenon. We measure the Mueller matrices and the polarization state of the reflected light from three different types of road sign commonly used. Measurements of the reflected intensity are also taken with respect to the angle of reflection. We find that different types of sign have different reflection properties. It is concluded that the optimal solution for attenuating the retroreflected intensity is using a linear polarized light source and a linear polarizer with perpendicular orientation (with regard to the source) at the detector.
