Ethan Lovett first appears in Port Charles on January 30, 2009. The Australian con artist shows up at The Haunted Star - the site of Robert and Holly's first meeting in 1982 - in a scene reminiscent of Robert and Luke's first meeting in 1980.

We soon find out that Ethan is carrying a photo of Robert and Luke, taken at Luke and Laura's wedding in 1981.
Ethan eventually tells Luke that he got the photo from Holly. Holly was not in Port Charles when LnL married, so it doesn't make sense that she'd have this photo (never mind that she was presumed dead for 2 years, so Robert would have ended up with all this stuff - though Robin says in 2009 she'd never seen the photo before). It's possible that she found it in Robert's house in 1992 or 1993. But, it would make more sense for her to have a picture of the two of them from 1982-1987. There is someone else involved in this story who WAS in Port Charles when Luke and Laura married...
In late April 2009, Helena comes to Port Charles. She meets Ethan, suggests to Luke that Ethan is his son, gets a painting from Wyndemere, and leaves.
In the back of the painting is ... a birth certificate.
In the middle of all of this, Luke asks Helena not to bother Lucky anymore. A few months later, she uses Ethan's paternity to do just that.
We never find out who that birth certificate belonged to. Fast Forward 3 years, Holly tells Helena that Ethan is Robert's son. Helena leaves to do a DNA test. If she finds out he is Luke's she says she will kill both Holly AND Ethan. She does not bother either of them after that. But, she DOES tell Robert a few months later that she has neglected to get revenge on him for Mikkos' death.
Maybe convincing Luke and Holly they had an affair and then hiding Robert's son from him is that revenge?

Ethan was supposedly given up for adoption in Australia some time between June and October of 1987. Robin tells Ethan he was conceived while Robert was in Port Charles busting Bert Ramsey (September 22, 1986 through January 13, 1987) and that RnH were apart "long before Ethan was born". Holly tells Luke that it happened when they were running cons and had a one night stand in Singapore. But, according to what we saw onscreen in 1986/1987, Holly was at home in Australia - in the house she shared with Robert, that Robin had JUST returned from visiting - while Robert was in Port Charles on the Ramsey case. Also, in the summer and fall of 1987, Holly was in a coma in England and could not have been in Australia putting babies up for adoption.
The story is convoluted and has been told in contradictory bits and pieces since day one. But, considering parties involved include 1) Holly's family who kept her accident and coma a secret 2) Faison, who used Holly to distract Robert in 1992, and 3) Helena, who tells Robert she neglected to make him pay for his part in Mikkos' death AND uses Ethan to further antagonize Lucky, maybe, we have a scam, not by Holly, but by Helena Cassadine with some help from Faison and the Durbans?
