I was born in Jeddah, the vibrant port city of Saudi Arabia. In 1998, during the excitement of the FIFA World Cup (which ended in heartbreak for Brazilian fans like myself), I moved to Bangladesh—my motherland—after completing high school.
Driven by a deep interest in health and well-being, I pursued a medical degree and took the Hippocratic Oath in 2013. However, my true passion lay in public health rather than individual patient care. I was fortunate to begin my public health journey with icddr,b, one of the world’s leading global health research institutions. My first assignment took me to Zakiganj, a remote, low-resource village near the northeastern border of Bangladesh. The area is marked by limited access to healthcare, infrastructure, and basic public services—conditions that pose significant challenges to both the community and the professionals working there. It was in this setting that I gained firsthand experience in delivering public health interventions where they are needed most. This formative experience deepened my commitment to improving health outcomes at the population level.
After a few years in the field, I completed a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology. I then joined the Dhaka Hospital of icddr,b to gain hands-on clinical experience in Newborn and Child Health, later transitioning to the Maternal and Child Health Division. There, I focused on analyzing large-scale population and health facility data, particularly around the quality of care in Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health.
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I became fascinated by the use of Machine Learning and AI in public health. I recognized early on that these tools would become essential in understanding and predicting population health trends. This led me to seek a program that combined modern data science with a foundation in health—one that welcomed professionals like doctors and epidemiologists. The Master of Data Science program at UBC was the perfect fit, and I’m proud to be the first from my country to be admitted.
Currently, I work as a Business Analyst at Stroke Services BC, a provincial health improvement network under PHSA. Our mission is to reduce the incidence of stroke, support world-class stroke care, and ensure the best possible outcomes for patients across British Columbia.
Outside of work, I’m an extrovert with a contagious sense of humor. I love exploring new places, meeting new people, and trying new cuisines. My hobbies include cooking, drumming, hiking, and listening to music. Above all, I’m a family man who cherishes time with my wife and kids
