The National Math Honor Society Chapter at Richard Montgomery High School recognizes students interested in math and encourages them to excel in the subject. Through enriched activities, members are able to explore the world of Mathematics. Members are provided with various opportunities ranging from fun school activities to national/state/local competitions. Our goal is to promote mathematics in RM and to provide the opportunity for students to learn the fun side of math. All Richard Montgomery students are benefited from the service that the members of the society provide.
Dr. Karl Kovacs obtained his Biochemistry PhD from the Chemistry Department at the University of South Florida under Robert Potter, PhD. where he investigated the role of inhibitory phosphoproteins on the cell cycle progression of Xenopus oocytes. With a solid protein background behind him, he followed Randy Kincaid, PhD to Human Genome Sciences, Inc. in Rockville, MD as a post-doc working closely with SKB and TIGR on newly discovered protein kinases and protein phosphatases coming out of the high-throughput discovery efforts. Again, following Dr. Kincaid, he utilized both his protein and molecular biology backgrounds working in a start-up CRO serving the NIH and surrounding biotech companies. His strengths in DNA sequencing and bioinformatics were then put to the test at OriGene Technologies, Inc., where under the guidance of Wei-wu He, PhD and Gilbert Jay, PhD, he outfitted and ran the HTP-DNA sequencing facility in search of full-length cDNA copies of every human transcript. The culmination of his lab experiences along with his effective communication skills brought him into more customer facing roles at OriGene including both alliance management, project management, and leading the customer services teams (Tech Services, Customer Care, and Order Entry).
Currently, Dr. Kovacs has chosen to start a second career to follow his lifelong enjoyment of teaching. He was accepted into (and recently completed) the alternative teaching certificate program, ACET (MCPS and Montgomery College). He is certified to teach Chem and Bio and MS science in Maryland.
Recently, he has found a consuming passion for Forensic Science and Police Investigations. Dr. Kovacs wants to apply his scientific background to this field and bring that passion to all his students at RMHS. He believes this is a fascinating field where he can incorporate all the STEAM disciplines.
