Pioneering Change: The Rising Stars of Rugby League in Ghana

In 2021, Adiza Mohammed, a dedicated nurse and passionate rugby league player, envisioned a transformative journey for rugby league in the Northern part of Ghana. Today, we celebrate the remarkable odyssey, achievements, and profound impact of Adiza and the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG).

Adiza's vision to combat teenage pregnancy by involving young people in Rugby League sparked an extraordinary expedition to Kpadjai in the Northern Region. On July 10, 2021, the Rugby League Federation Ghana wholeheartedly embraced Adiza's idea, dispatching two representatives on an inspiring mission.

As a result of this initiative, two young girls from Kpadjai joined their counterparts in Accra for the inaugural 9s Rugby League contact championship. Fast forward to 2023, Adiza's unwavering commitment bore fruit as three exceptional young ladies, brimming with national team potential, emerged under her guidance, gracing the field in the inaugural 13s Championship held in Accra.

With the dual aim of promoting rugby league and pursuing education, the RLFG, in collaboration with Awutu Winton Senior High, paved the way for two talented girls from Kpadjai to secure Senior High School education through a groundbreaking policy admitting promising rugby league players seeking further education.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Adiza expressed her joy, saying, "I'm very happy because when I came here the first time, parents never bothered about girl child education, leading to high rates of teenage pregnancy. Rugby league has significantly impacted the community: The sport has influenced a lot of girls here; without the games, they wouldn't have known Accra, let alone gained admission to school. The admission of these two girls has also led to more people joining our training sessions."

A heartfelt thank you goes to Adiza Mohammed, the Northern Regional Manager, and the collective efforts of Riddick Alibah (Greater Accra Regional Manager), William Pearce Biney (Skolars Development Officer), Elizabeth Adongo (Team Manager, Accra Panthers), and Elias Agbetey for supporting the journey of our two girls, Celestine Kumah and Bilile Bernice Nedebadowbe. Together, you have not only nurtured talents but also pioneered a movement shaping the future of rugby league in Ghana!

SALFORD RED DEVILS AND RUGBY LEAGUE FEDERATION GHANA RENEW PARTNERSHIP FOR SECOND YEAR

APRIL 2023

We are excited to reveal we have renewed our international partnership with the Rugby League Federation Ghana for a second year.

In celebration, we are delighted to launch a brand-new Salford Red Devils x Rugby League Federation Ghana training t-shirt, in association with our official kit suppliers, VX3 apparel.

The design features the national colours of Ghana, along with a striking Kente cloth pattern celebrating the vibrant community of the nation.

Kente is a Ghanaian textile, made of handwoven cloth, strips of silk and cotton, which in the modern day, has become widespread to commemorate special occasions.

The shirt is available to purchase online HERE.

However, if you want to see the design in person, VX3 will be in attendance this Sunday when we take on Catalans Dragons and will be stocked-up with our new addition!

Late last year, as yet another sign of our progression as a partnership, we launched the Salford Red Devils Tag Rugby League Academy.

The ultimate aim is to give children in Ghanaian schools the opportunity to try Rugby League; increasing their physical activity, whilst learning the core skills of the sport, in participation with clubs established in the country.

Players identified through the Tag Rugby Academy by teachers and community coaches will be placed into the ‘Rising Stars’ programme, offering further playing and training opportunities.

We also believe it is important to highlight the incredible projects Rugby League Federation Ghana have undertaken themselves - away from the rugby league field.

The Pad a Girl project - which began earlier this year - is helping break the cycle of poverty and improve menstrual health for young girls in schools across the country.

To find out more, you can watch the video linked in the tweet below!

GHANA RANKED 26TH IN WORLD RUGBY LEAGUE

(JANUARY 2023)

2022 has indeed been a great year for rugby league in Ghana. From the 9s and 13s local leagues, playing with Oxford Univerity to the MEA

tournament where Ghana placed second to qualify to the next stage of the run towards the world rugby league championship.

Ghana has now been ranked 26th in the rugby league world ranking. This comes as the icing on the cake for what has been a splendid season.

The Official International Rugby League (IRL) World Rankings are calculated on each nation’s performance over the current season

and the three preceding seasons.

Points are awarded to each team for each match based on:

The result of the match i.e. win, lose or draw

The margin of victory (or defeat) - the larger the winning margin the greater the value to the rankings

The relative strength of opposition faced - if you play a higher ranked team that is of greater value than playing a lower ranked team

The date of the match – more recent matches are weighted more heavily - a result in the most recent 2 years is worth double a result 3 years ago and 4 times a result that is 4 years old

The importance of the match - World Cup matches are ranked top followed in order by World Cup Qualifiers, Regional Championships and one-off international matches

The points are then used to create the Official World Rankings by ordering the teams by virtue of the points gained over the four year period.

Only officially sanctioned matches played at senior level between two approved members are considered as part of the rankings.

Speaking with the Technical Director of the RLFG, Mr Marshall Nortey, this is what he had to say; "This feat could not have been achieved without

our sponsors, the media and supporters. Thanks for being part of our success and progress.

A big appréciation goes to all teams, coaches, managers, and players who are involved with the sports. You're the reason we have come this far. Thank you for an awesome season.

FROM FOOTBALLS TO RUGBY LEAGUE BALLS

(May 2022)

George Asamoah is a teacher at Akrofrom D/A Junior High School (JHS) which is located in the Afigya Kwabre South District. He teaches from JHS 1-3. His field of teaching is Mathematics which happens to be a core subject in our Junior High Schools. Not only does Mr. Asamoah teach mathematics, but he also takes his students through both the theoretical and practical aspects of Physical Education and Health, mostly known by the general populace as “PE”.

Mr. Asamoah first got to know of the Rugby League through a workshop that was organized by the Ashanti Regional Sports Director at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi last year in 2021. During the workshop, physical education instructors were exposed to both the theoretical and practical aspects of the sport. This got Mr. Asamoah interested in Rugby League.

"I have grown fond of the game and I now happen to be the organizer in the Afigya Kwabre South District".

Not only do I organize rugby league training sessions, but I also happen to be a handball coach and also a footballer.

Mr. Asamoah has added rugby league into the school curriculum and he sometimes uses the PE period to teach the students. Teaching the students about this game hasn’t been easy as he has a lot of challenges. These challenges could not be relinquished without the right mentality to compromise especially when he first started teaching his students how to play rugby league. "We had to make use of footballs instead of standardized rugby balls and this made training very difficult especially when it came to the handling of the ball".

The rugby balls received from RLFG made training much easier and more understanding.

Currently, I have more than 60 students under my tutelage. These students are from the various cohorts that I teach.

"As of now rugby league is being taught three days a week and I can say that we’ve made substantive strides since I began teaching rugby league in the school".

These students aspire to become professionals and their dream is to one day make their families and the nation proud by not only representing Ghana but also winning trophies.

The support of colleagues in the school has been enormous. They sometimes share words of encouragement and motivate the students to keep working hard and help in taking coverage of training sessions which help Mr. Asomoah in analyzing areas to work on.

RLFG AT 1O

March 2022

Today we celebrate 10 years since the phone call that changed Rugby League in Ghana, West Africa forever.

In 2012, London Skolars Founder Hector McNeil and his wife Sara had an idea to parachute Rugby League into the heart of Ghana. Linking in International Rugby League’s Secretary General Danny Kazandjian (then General Manager for the ERL) and UK Sport’s Clare Barrell, that idea quickly became a reality.

The conversation led to Danny and Clare travelling to Accra, meeting with the University of Ghana and interviewing candidates to coordinate Rugby League in the nation to ensure the game could flourish in the economic hub of Accra. With the continuous backing of the Giwa-McNeil family since day one, the rest as they say, is history.

Today we extend our thanks to Hector, Sara, Danny and Clare for all their support, and over the coming weeks we’ll be recognising the pioneers of the game in Ghana and what Rugby League Federation Ghana have achieved over the past decade.

Following a comprehensive bidding process, Ghana has been chosen to host the 2022 Middle East Africa Championship, which will run from 27 September to 2 October. Four nations will take part - Morocco, Nigeria, and Cameroon joining the hosts - in what will be the third edition of the championship.

There is greater incentive for the winners this time with victory seeing them join the qualification process on the continent for the 2025 Rugby League World Cup. President of Rugby League Federation Ghana, Nana Prempeh, commented: “We are very happy to have won the bid to host the 2022 MEA Championship. This will aid RLFG in strengthening its relationship with the government, it also increases awareness to attract more players in various regions, and possibly investors to assist growing the sport. Ghana will be ready.“

RLFG general manager, Jafaru Mustafa, added: “After 10 years of being involved with the sport and with the commitment of the human resources around at the moment, I am very confident that the 2022 MEA Championship is in the right place. We will work assiduously to make this event one of the best Africa has ever witnessed. Any players with Ghanaian heritage who would like to get in touch, please contact us through our website.”

The Head of Marketing & Branding for RLFG, Daniel Oko Djanie expressed high level of excitement. He said this is a great opportunity for Corporate organizations, Individual philanthropists and sponsors to support Rugby League which will increase their brand connection and growth and also help develop the wonderful sport.

Details of the draw for the tournament will be announced soon and are likely to be linked to a Super League fixture.

European Rugby League interim chair, Graeme Thompson, who oversaw the bid process said: “The staging of the Championship in Ghana will mark another significant milestone for the nation and the sport. After many years of sustained development in Ghana, it will provide a high profile event and a great reward for all those volunteers who have done so much for the game there. Having witnessed first-hand the last Championship in 2019, this is a unique event. It will no doubt see high impact competition on the field and another step forward in Middle East Africa’s journey as a standalone confederation.”

UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB SET TO TOUR GHANA

DECEMBER 2021

2022 is set to host yet another significant milestone for Rugby League Federation Ghana as the prestigious University of Oxford will be looking to send their Rugby League Club to travel to West Africa in the summer months. Oxford are the first team to visit Accra since the GB Pioneers in 2014, and will be the first true student rugby league touring side in the history of the game to compete in Ghana.

Now in their 45th year of existence, both the Blues 1st and 2nd Grade are currently enjoying a successful season in the British University & Colleges Sport Leagues with the highly anticipated Varsity versus Cambridge University slated post season. You would then, be forgiven for wondering how a club such as Oxford finds itself in the planning stages of touring a country that sits over 4000 miles and 2 continents away.

OURLFC President Joseph Grosvenor explains, ‘we saw the traction that the media coverage was getting for Rugby League in Ghana earlier this year, the National Team V the Presidents XIII and the success of the 1Jersey Project and decided to reach out to former Oxford and Ghana National Team back rower Abeku Nelson to see if we could link in. Our aim is to take a travelling party of 25 players and staff, assist with some community work and then have a 2-game series versus the Presidents XIII and the National side. Ultimately, we want to promote the great game of rugby league in Africa and highlight the values we have as a club’.

Former Ghana National Team and University of Oxford player Marcus-Alexander Amate Neil (who captained both sides) paid tribute to his former club stating ‘OURLFC is an outstanding set up, with the game being on the rise in Ghana and the need for support from those outsides of West Africa, this will go some way to developing the game on the ground. I’m looking forward to seeing how the physical match up unfolds more than anything.’

RLFG General Manager Jafaru Mustapha has highlighted the impact the tour will have and the hope for the future ‘2022 marks a decade since the arrival of Rugby League in our nation, and one space we are now ready to further develop is Higher Education. It is fitting then, that we will welcome Oxford to the University of Ghana to compete against both the Presidents XIII and the HANetf National Team. Our hope is to build a solid foundation for us to take forward and one day tour England on the return leg’.

With Abeku Nelson continuing his support of both teams, he will have a split allegiance come July as he joins the Oxford touring party, yet will be representing Ghana’s National side, and notes ‘I have an affinity to both groups, and know the importance of this tour to each. I do hope, based on the back of this tour, that more clubs see the growth of the game in Africa and look to head there for competition. I’ll be with Oxford off field, but 100% with Ghana on it.’

Both parties are of course paying close attention to the pandemic as we move into the new year and for more information about how you can support the tour please contact OURLFC Club President Joseph Grosvenor on ‘joseph.grosvenor@wadham.ox.ac.uk’

RLFG LAUNCHES #XXPOWER

NOVEMBER 2021

The Rugby League Federation Ghana(RLFG) has launched the XX Power campaign, an important stage in the pathway to establishing a women’s national team, following from an interesting and highly competitive series of full-contact games in the Origins Cup.

XX Power, the fourth stage of the pathway, is an introductory coaching and officiating course specially designed for women rugby league players in Ghana.  It is designed to provide the women with basic coaching and officiating skills with the hope of them attaining Level 1 coaching status in the shortest possible time.

Nadia Lilian Enyan, Assistant Women’s Coordinator of the RLFG had this to say about XX Power.

“It is a good initiative and a good way to motivate the ladies and women in general. This will help women break the glass ceiling in sports, especially in rugby league, and will also boost our chances of taking up international roles. The ladies should take advantage of XX Power and make the most of the opportunity”.

Edinam Afi Yengbe, RLFG Women’s Coordinator and engineer of the programme sharing her thoughts, expressed her delight in the launch of the programme.

“I am excited that XX Power has started. The ladies are ready and are showing dedication to the course. At this rate, we would establish our national team sooner than anticipated. The future of women’s rugby league in Ghana looks so exciting and we are ever will begin put in the work to make this dream of ours a reality”, Miss Yengbe said.

General manager and leader for coaching, Jafaru Awudu Mustapha said he is overwhelmed about the steps and pace at which the female players are acquiring skill and knowledge in coaching and officiating.

Mr Mustapha said with this initiative, the ladies will have a greater advantage when the Salford partnership deal runs and also have an upper hand in understanding when taking up the Level 1 courses under the International Rugby League.

Technical Director of RLFG Marshall Nortey expressed his excitement to lead the session with the ladies.

"I'm excited to deliver a session in this program as the ladies have begun competitive contact and it's only fair that we complement their game knowledge off the field tMr"

Mr Nortey said the program will be the catalyst by which all ladies will wear national colours in competitions.

"Its success will mean a replication in all the other wings of the playing body ie. juvenile, youth, tertiary and men." Mr Nortey added.

Mr Nortey finally commended the women's Coordinator, Judith Yengbe and her team for this initiative and recommended other coordinators to do the same.

The upcoming edition by fixture and participation poses to be a more exciting one as new entrants and new categories get welcomed.

Aside from Nungua Tigers who will be featuring in the 4 club men championship, RLFG has newly introduced the women and youth categories.

The campaign that saw the uprise in participation in Women's Rugby League in Ghana; Pretty Girls Play Rugby League, makes the upcoming Women's Rugby League Championship well-grounded and set to sail. Accra Panthers, Ghana Skolars and Nungua Tigers will cross swords in the Women's category.

2019 Champions, Bulls RLFC with 1st and 2nd Runners up, Ghana Scholars and Accra Panthers will welcome Nungua Tigers in the Men's category.

#WeEmpower

CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED (MARCH 2021)

The Women's Wing of the Rugby League Federation Ghana has launched a new campaign in anticipation of this year's International Women's Day. This campaign, themed #WeEmpower, is in solidarity with the UN's theme for the occasion this year. It aims to empower women by challenging stereotypes and male domination in all aspects of their lives, particularly in sports, and especially during this period when the world is facing the Covid-19 pandemic.

"With this campaign,  I'm hoping to empower a lot of women, encourage them to be better and to improve their quality of life.", said Rachel Ankomah, Women's Rugby League Cordinator. "We need to stop accepting what society says and fight for equal rights.  A woman can be and can do more than just being in the kitchen as society perceives. We have a lot of players who are also giving back to community through the work they do.

Also we have women who have taken up Leadership roles in the Federation and I believe that should be a great motivation to the ladies out there and an indication that they can achieve what they set their eyes to."

In lieu of this, there will be a program on the 8th of March to celebrate International Women's day.  This program is themed "Choose to Challenge: Challenging Stereotyping of Women and Women Empowerment".

Edinam Yengbe, the Assistant Women's and Events Coordinator, has this to say; "It is rather unfortunate that up until today, some women still hold traditional perspectives of themselves and their roles in society. Up until today, we still find women talking down on the successes of other women. We find women advising their daughters to behave in a certain way to be accepted in society. They choose to leave some aspects of decision making and some leadership positions to their male counterparts because it is what society expects of them. How about teaching our daughters that it is alright for them to challenge existing stereotypes? How about encouraging them to strive to effectively and efficiently operate in male-dominated fields?"

She goes on to add that she is "excited about the UN's theme for this year's International Women's Day celebration. This year, we choose to challenge. We choose to be a better version of ourselves. We choose to be empowered so we can empower other women. And we choose to begin this campaign with the women in the Rugby League Federation Ghana, while extending invitations to individuals, groups or societies who find this cause worthy to join is on this campaign. We are certainly leaving no one behind!"

In an interview on the upcoming event, this is what Nadia Lilian Enyan, Public Relations Officer and Sponsorship Manager, had to say; "The event is mainly aimed at encouraging more women who are interested in sports to join in without thinking of how they would be seen or thought of as a sportsperson. As we know a lot of women engaged in sporting activities are tagged with a certain name, either they’re seen as manly or “kankpe”. We hope to let women know they can indulge in all sporting activities freely regardless of what people think.

It’s all about believing in yourself and being confident about what you do and making impact."

"Also, the event aims to empower women and encourage women that they could be in the corporate world and still be sports people. There are several women out there who occupy managerial positions yet still are very sporty and no one is able to criticize them or ridicule them for what they do. This instills some form of confidence in you and should help encourage everyone that you can be a boss in the office and on the Field".

The event will be held virtually via Zoom on March 8, 2021. This is to ensure that no physical contact is made due to the Corona Virus pandemic, and also to allow for participants abroad to join in without trouble.

RLFG CALENDAR: YOUR MONTH BY MONTH GUIDE TO 2021 | (JAN 2021)

The Corona virus pandemic frown on sporting activities throughout the world in the greater part of 2020 may hopefully see discontinuity in the year ahead.

RLFG while receiving an equal share on the adverse effects of the pandemic, still kept its ahead above water to come through with innovative programs  carefully designed to suit all the pandemic protocols being observed globally.

The few which could materialize among the many planned at the end of the previous year are the Flagship 9s Series in January and February, The breast Cancer awareness program which tickled the interest of Corporate Ghana and the media alike, the pulling down of a one gender sport with the introduction of the the women's rugby league, the warily creation of the youth rugby league, obtaining affiliate member status of the International Rugby League Federation, RL boundaries extended into the military academy, and a fulfilling stand taken by the RLFG women's coordinator in some IRLF appointments.

Be that as it may, the 9s series took a bow after the second month while the 13s never saw a drop kick; resulting from the ban on all sporting activities.

With a much hopeful year ahead, RLFG has positioned itself to serve all within and outside the fraternity with an excessively ornate and embellished activities and events. Development remains the pivot of all efforts and actions of the  Federation.

Outlined below are some exclusive events to be held in the coming year:

> Introduction of RL to most Educational Institutions

> Introduction of RL into Zongo communities

> 9s Series

> 13s League

> Love Touch Tournament

> International Friendlies

> Blood Donation

> Breast Cancer Awareness Program

> Turn Over Weekends

RLFG anticipates making significant strides in extending the reach and knowledge of the sport in the coming season.

The General Manager, Jafaru Mustapha has  voiced out his confidence and hope he has in the coming year. '2021is an action packed year which  promises lots of fun. We pray all stakeholders bring on their A-game to realize the dream of becoming full members of IRL by 2023. I can't wait for the calendar season to begin', he iterated.

RLFG TURNOVER WEEKEND A GREAT SUCCESS

The Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) wrapped up 2020 in style with the first edition of the rugby league weekend dubbed “Turn-over Weekend.” The purpose of the rugby league weekend, was to educate, teach and help the community through Rugby League.

The 2-day event started off with fun games at the University of Ghana Rugby Field on Saturday 5th December 2020. With the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) pushing for the development of females in the sport, the ladies took to the field to showcase the game.

The men  also had  their turn, playing their first game of rugby league after 10 months, and it came as relief after being off the field for so long due to the pandemic. The children were not left out of the fun as Firm Foundation, Nungua Tigers and African Heroes also had kids participating in a game of touch rugby league.

The end of year dinner followed on Sunday 6th December 2020 at the Riklyn Hotel which brought players and staff of the RLFG together to celebrate their achievements. The event was graced by the President of the federation Farouk Nana Prempeh who was re-elected earlier this year to continue as the Head of the RLFG.

In an interaction with Men's Coordinator, Riddick Alibah he had this to say "This year was tough, regardless we as a federation didn't go down without a fight, as we were able to engage in a lot of activities off field. “Turn-over weekend” being the maiden edition gave us that big bang. An opportunity to engage and interact  with ourselves off-field also to play and prepare ourselves for the year ahead which is quite bleak yet promising.”

“I am poised to do my all for next year's event and I am certain all executives, clubs and stakeholders are ready as well. We still need all the support we can get and call on all who can and have love for sport to join in. With little or nothing we are making history and we will definitely keep growing bigger and better.” He further stated

“Rugby League is not just here to stay but here to impact our community, incite growth in the kids and expand the sports horizon in Ghana." Riddick concluded

General Manager of the RLFG, Jafaru Awudu Mustapha also had this to say "With the splendid performance and solidarity I saw over the weekend, I must say rugby league weekend has come to stay. Am grateful to all member and well-wishers for embracing the initiative. I can’t wait for the January edition."

With 2020 being very bleak and challenging for most contact sports, The RLFG was not an exception, but they made the most of the year undertaking various exercises like a blood donation exercise in August with the National Blood Service and Decathlon Ghana, a breast cancer awareness programme which was themed “Women in Sports,” the Pretty Girls Play Rugby League campaign that was launched in July to combat the stereotyping of sports ladies and then the training of some military recruits to help establish an armed forces competition in the country in November.

The RLFG was finally approved as an Affiliate member of the International Rugby League (IRL) after demonstrating considerable growth of the sport in the country. The Rugby league 9s will begin a new season next year after being restricted to only two editions this year.

RUGBY LEAGUE TOUCHES MILITARY

(Dec 2020)

The rugby league federation of Ghana engaged instructors of the Physical Training School in a five session training program in a bid to introduce rugby league to the armed forces.

The course group which comprise personnel from various security services from across the country are currently, undergoing a physical training course at the Ghana Military Academy and Training Schools-Teshie, and as such presented the Rugby League Federation Ghana the opportunity to teach the sport.

During the sessions the instructors were taught how to pass and catch, tackle, defend and play the ball. They were subsequently put into teams to play small sided games that improved their knowledge and skills.

At the moment, the federation has a target of engaging personnel from the security services in officiating and coaching and is hopeful that through this successful exercise the game will be wide spread across the nation.

In a conversation with the Officer-Commanding of the PT School Lt. Gershon Adasi  ”Introducing rugby awoke the students' mind to the game of rugby league. The students, instructors and myself are happy to have learnt new things in the sport i.e. marking the field of play using cones and other suitable material, ball handling, utilizing space in attack and in defence.  Playing the Touch game made them appreciate and practise skills acquired during the four sessions of their training. It was exciting to play rugby with professional players from the Ghana Rugby League team. Your team coming has added value to the existing games and sports the Training School teaches and we are willing to support Rugby League .”

Technical director of the RLFG, Mr. Marshall Nortey had this to say “It will surprise you to know how receptive people are to the different variations of Rugby League children, young adults, older adults and even the aged. The PT school of the Military Academy, Teshie and its students are no exception. The product from these 5 weeks of introduction to Rugby League has been telling with great display of game knowledge to the enjoyment and admiration of onlookers. I must say it has been very successful, RLFG has found new partners in RL development and we shall follow up on the students as they leave for their various units with coaching and officiating opportunities after graduation.

Moving forward, the technical unit will look at interested persons from the military to learn the sport and help them grow and develop in the discipline.

The current general manager Mr. Jafaru commented that, because of Ghana has attained affiliate status, the possibility of expanding the game is very high and as such the need for more coaches and referees who will take up the game and make it enjoyable for the players and supporters. There are opportunities coming requesting for people who are interested in coaching and officiating and I think this is one way that will help us get enough referees and coordinators. This is crucial looking that the number of lives that we are looking at impacting.
